Self-esteem and life satisfaction in older adults of the Geriatric Residence of a Religious Congregation, Lima, 2023

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine the relationship between self-esteem and life satisfaction in older adults from the Geriatric Residence of a Religious Congregation in Lima. The scientific method was used, with a hypothetical-deductive model, quantitative approach, and basic research type. The level was descriptive correlational, with a non-experimental and cross-sectional design. The study sample consisted of 80 older adults, both men and women. The instruments used were the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (1965) and the Life Satisfaction Scale by Diener, Emmons, Larsen, and Griffin (1985), validated in Peru by Ventura-León, Caycho-Rodríguez, and Barboza-Palomino (2018) and Martínez (2004), respectively. The Pearson correlation result (r = 0.402; p = 0.000 < 0.01) confirmed a positive, moderate, and very significant correlation between self-esteem and life satisfaction. This indicates that the higher the self-esteem, the greater the life satisfaction. It concludes that older adults in a geriatric residence who receive close support and spiritual guidance tend to have better self-esteem and life satisfaction.

La presente investigación tuvo como finalidad determinar la relación entre autoestima y satisfacción de vida en adultos mayores de la Residencia Geriátrica de una Congregación Religiosa de Lima. Se empleó el método científico, modelo hipotético-deductivo, con enfoque cuantitativo, investigación de tipo básica. El nivel fue descriptivo correlacional y el diseño no experimental y transversal. La muestra de estudio estuvo conformada por 80 adultos mayores, hombres y mujeres. Los instrumentos aplicados fueron la Escala de Autoestima de Rosenberg (1965) y la Escala de Satisfacción con la Vida de Diener, Emmons, Larsen y Griffin (1985) validadas en el Perú por Ventura-León, Caycho-Rodríguez y Barboza-Palomino (2018) y Martínez (2004), respectivamente. El resultado estadístico del coeficiente de Pearson (r=0,402; p= 0,000 <0.01), confirmó que hay una correlación positiva, moderada y muy significativa entre la Autoestima y la Satisfacción con la Vida. Entendiéndose que, a mayor valoración en los aspectos que reconocen la autoestima será mayor valoración que se realiza para la satisfacción con la vida. Concluyendo que el adulto mayor en general, logra una buena autoestima y satisfacción de vida en una residencia geriátrica que acompaña su proceso de manera cercana, identificándose que el acompañamiento espiritual sería considerado importante por los resultados positivos encontrados.
