The objective of this study was to determine the inhibitory effect of the essential oil of Schinus molle (Molle) compared to 0.12% Chlorhexidine Gluconate and Colgate Plax® mouthwash in inhibiting bacterial growth of Streptococcus mutans in vitro. The study was experimental, cross-sectional, prospective, and analytical at an explanatory level, conducted in a microbiology laboratory. The population consisted of Streptococcus mutans strains (ATCC 25175), with a sample of 40 Petri dishes. The agar diffusion method was used with 6 mm diameter wells, where 100 µl of Schinus molle (Molle) essential oil at 25%, 50%, and 100%, 0.12% Chlorhexidine Gluconate, Colgate Plax® mouthwash, and Tween 20 were poured. The results showed that the concentrations of 50% and 100% Schinus molle essential oil produced an average inhibition zone of 10.97 mm and 10.46 mm at 24 hours, and 11.06 mm and 10.59 mm at 48 hours, which were smaller than the inhibition zones formed by 0.12% Chlorhexidine Gluconate and Colgate Plax® mouthwash at both times against the Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 25175) strain.
Resumen
El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar el efecto inhibidor del aceite esencial de Schinus molle (Molle) en comparación al Gluconato de Clorhexidina 0,12% y el enjuague bucal Colgate Plax®en la inhibición bacteriana del Streptococcus mutans in vitro. El estudio fue de tipo experimental, transversal, prospectivo y analítico de nivel explicativo, llevándose a cabo en un laboratorio de microbiología. La población estuvo conformada por cepas de Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 25175), teniendo como muestra 40 placas Petri, mediante el método de difusión Agar Sangre, en el cual se realizó pozos de 6 mm. de diámetro donde se vertieron 100 ul del aceite esencial Schinus molle (Molle) al 25%, 50% y 100%, Gluconato de Clorhexidina al 0,12%, enjuague bucal Colgate Plax® y Tween 20. Los resultados demostraron que las concentraciones al 50% y 100% del aceite esencial Schinus molle presentaron un halo de inhibición promedio de 10,97 mm. y 10,46 mm. a las 24 horas, y de 11,06 mm. y 10,59 mm. a las 48 horas, siendo menor que el halo formado por el Gluconato de Clorhexidina al 0,12% y el enjuague bucal Colgate Plax® en ambos tiempos frente a la cepa de Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 25175).
