Effectiveness of the use of saline solution compared to the use of heparinized solution to patent the arterial line and avoid obstructions in intensive care unit patients

Abstract

Objective: Systematize the evidence about the effectiveness of the use of saline solution compared to the use of heparinized solution to permeabilize the arterial line and avoid obstructions in intensive care unit patients. Method: Review A review of the evidence available in the databases: MEDLINE, PUBMED, SCIELO AND COCHRANE LIBRARY has been carried out, from the years 2010 to 2019; Randomized, quasi-experimental, cross-sectional clinical trials on the use of heparin versus the use of saline to improve the patency of arterial catheters were included. Results: 10 articles were found, which discuss, compare and analyze the use of heparin to improve arterial catheter patency. Conclusions: Studies show that the use of heparin is associated with a lower incidence of arterial catheter obstruction, also increasing its average life and improving its duration. However, some articles showed little difference when choosing whichever solution was used.

Objetivo: Sistematizar las evidencias acerca de la efectividad del uso de solución salina comparada con el uso de solución heparinizada para permeabilizar la línea arterial y evitar obstrucciones en pacientes de unidad de cuidados intensivos Método: Revisión Se ha llevado a cabo una revisión de la evidencia disponible en las bases de datos: MEDLINE, PUBMED, SCIELO Y COCHRANE LIBRARY, desde los años 2010 al 2019; se incluyeron, ensayos clínicos aleatorios, cuasi experimental, transversal sobre el uso de heparina frente al uso de solución salina para mejorar la permeabilidad de los catéteres arteriales. Resultados: Se hallaron 10 artículos, los cuales discuten, comparan y analizan el uso de heparina para la mejora de la permeabilidad del catéter arterial. Conclusiones: En los estudios que se demuestra que el uso de heparina va asociado a una menor incidencia de obstrucción de catéteres arteriales, así mismo aumentando su vida promedio y mejorando su duración. Sin embargo, algunos artículos mostraron poca diferencia frente a la elección de cualquier solución que se utilice.
