Knowledge and practices of mothers on the prevention of acute respiratory infections in children under 5 years old.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to determine the relationship between the level of knowledge and practices in the prevention of acute respiratory infections among mothers with children under 5 years of age attending the Peru Tercera Zona Health Center. The study was descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional. The sample consisted of 71 mothers, and the technique used was the survey with a questionnaire, which was employed by Carmen Rosario Honorio Quiroz in a similar study. The results showed that 79% of the mothers surveyed had medium knowledge, 13% had low knowledge, and only 8% had high knowledge; while 67% of the mothers reported performing correct practices, and 33% performed incorrect practices. Emphasis should be placed on educating mothers about the importance of vaccination, nutrition in the prevention of this illness, recognizing initial symptoms, identifying otitis as a complication of this clinical condition, and understanding that when a child complains of a sore throat, they are already experiencing a respiratory infection. Regarding practices, the first action that should be taken is to provide warm liquids, offer warmth, avoid rubbing the chest, prevent overcrowding, and increase the number of meals. It was concluded that there is a direct relationship between the mothers’ knowledge level and the practices they undertake in the prevention of acute respiratory infections.

La presente investigación tuvo como objetivo determinar la relación entre el nivel de conocimiento y las prácticas en la prevención de infecciones respiratorias agudas en madres con menores de 5 años, atendidos en el Centro de Salud Perú Tercera Zona. El estudio fue descriptivo correlacional, de corte transversal, la muestra estuvo constituida por 71 madres, se utiliza como técnica la encuesta y como instrumento el cuestionario el cual fue empleado por Carmen Rosario Honorio Quiroz, en una investigación similar. Los resultados indicaron que el 79% de las madres encuestadas presentaron un nivel de conocimiento medio, 13% bajo y solo 8% alto; mientras que el 67% de las madres señalaron realizar prácticas correctas y 33% incorrectas. Se debe enfatizar en la educación de las madres sobre la importancia de la vacunación, la alimentación en la prevención de esta enfermedad, en los signos iniciales, que identifiquen a la otitis como una complicación de este cuadro clínico, cuando al niño le duele la garganta ya tienen una infección respiratoria. En cuanto a la práctica la primera acción que deben hacer es dar líquidos tibios, brindar abrigo, no le debe frotar el pecho, evitar el hacinamiento, aumentar el número de comidas. Se concluyó que existe relación directa entre el nivel de conocimiento de las madres y las prácticas que realizan en la prevención de las infecciones respiratorias agudas.
