Imaging characteristics of osteoarthritis in the TMJ, using panoramic radiography and CONE BEAM computed tomography in patients treated at the maxillofacial diagnostic institute

Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine the imaging characteristics of osteoarthritis in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), using panoramic radiography and CONE BEAM computed tomography in patients treated at the maxillofacial diagnosis institute. An observational, retrospective, cross-sectional, and descriptive study was conducted. A population and sample of 42 patients were determined using panoramic radiography and CONE BEAM computed tomographies. The following variables were collected: sex, age, location of the condyle, and imaging characteristics of osteoarthritis of the temporomandibular joint. The database registration and statistical analysis of the information was carried out through the SPSS statistical program version 23. The results showed that the flattening characteristic is the most frequent. Females are the most predominant sex, and the left condyle is the most affected with osteoarthritis of the temporomandibular joint. The agreement regarding the diagnosis of osteoarthritis of the temporomandibular joint using panoramic radiography and Cone Beam computed tomography is 61.9%. It is concluded that the imaging characteristic of flattening, on the left side and in females, are the most frequent.

El objetivo de la presente investigación fue determinar las características imagenológicas de artrosis en la atm, utilizando radiografía panorámica y tomografía computarizada CONE BEAM en pacientes atendidos en el instituto de diagnóstico maxilofacial. Se realizó un estudio observacional, retrospectivo, transversal y descriptivo. Se determinó utilizar una población y muestra de 42 pacientes mediante radiografía panorámica y tomografías computarizadas CONE BEAM. Se recolectaron las siguientes variables: sexo, edad, ubicación del cóndilo y característica imagenologica de la artrosis de la articulación temporomandibular. El registro de la base de datos y análisis estadístico de la información se realizó a través del programa estadístico SPSS versión 23. Los resultados mostraron que la característica aplanamiento es la más frecuente. El sexo femenino es el más predominante y el cóndilo izquierdo es el más afectado con la artrosis de la articulación temporomandibular. La concordancia en cuanto al diagnóstico de la artrosis de la articulación temporomandibular mediante la radiografía panorámica y tomografía computarizada Cone Beam es de un porcentaje de 61,9%. Se concluye que la característica imagenologica aplanamiento, en el lado izquierdo y en el sexo femenino son las más frecuentes.
