Behavior evaluation using the nitrous oxide sedation technique in children from 5 to 8 years of age during invasive treatments in a private dental clinic, Lima 2022

Abstract

The objective of this research was to evaluate the behavior of children aged 5 to 8 years during invasive treatments using nitrous oxide sedation in a private dental clinic in Lima, 2022. The study followed a quantitative approach, basic research, non-experimental, and cross-sectional design. The population and sample consisted of 60 children aged 5 to 8 years who were treated with nitrous oxide sedation during invasive procedures at a private dental clinic in Lima in 2022. The Houpt scale was used as the instrument. Descriptive statistics, frequency tables, bar graphs, and cross-tabulations were calculated using SPSS v. 23. The results showed that 78.3% of the children did not cry, 96.7% were awake and reactive, and 90% showed intermittent or no movement. The study concluded that 95% of the cases reported positive behavior, which was significant, demonstrating the effectiveness of the nitrous oxide sedation procedure.

Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo evaluar el comportamiento de niños de 5 a 8 años de edad durante tratamientos invasivos usando la técnica de sedación con óxido nitroso en una clínica odontológica privada, Lima 2022. Se apoyó en un enfoque cuantitativo, investigación básica, no experimental-trasversal. La población y muestra estuvo conformada por 60 niños de 5 a 8 años de edad atendidos durante tratamientos invasivos usando la técnica de sedación con óxido nitroso en una clínica odontológica privada ubicada en Lima en el año 2022. Se utilizó como instrumento la escala de Houpt. Se calcularon estadísticos descriptivos, tablas de frecuencia, gráficos de barra y tablas cruzadas empleando el programa SPSS v. 23. Los resultados indican que, 78.3% de los niños no reportaron llanto, 96.7% estaban despiertos y reactivo, 90% presentaron movimientos intermitentes o sin movimiento. Se concluye que, 95% de los casos reportaron un comportamiento positivo el cual resultó significativo demostrando así, la efectividad del procedimiento de sedación con óxido nitroso.
