Effectiveness of activated charcoal as a treatment for acute gastric poisoning

Abstract

Objective: To analyze the evidence on the effectiveness of activated charcoal as a treatment for acute gastric poisoning. Methodology: This is an experimental, descriptive, observational, and retrospective systematic review. The search was restricted to full-text articles, and the selected articles underwent critical reading to evaluate their evidence grade using the GRADE method to assess the quality of evidence and strength of recommendations. Twelve articles were selected, with 66% from Spain (8), 16% from Denmark (2), the Dominican Republic (1), and Finland (1), respectively. Results: Of the 12 articles reviewed, 10/12 articles show that activated charcoal administered within the first hour after ingesting the drug reduced the effect on the drug by 48.5%, which was statistically significant. Conclusions: Activated charcoal is effective for managing gastric poisoning in adults when applied within the first hour.

Objetivo: Analizar la evidencia de la eficacia del Carbón Activado como tratamiento de la intoxicación gástrica aguda. Metodología: Revisión sistemática experimental, descriptiva, observacional y retrospectiva. La búsqueda se ha restringido a artículos con textos completos, y los artículos seleccionados se sometieron a una lectura crítica evaluando su grado de evidencia utilizando el método GRADE para evaluar la calidad de la evidencia y la fuerza de recomendación. Se seleccionaron 12 artículos, encontrando que el 66% provienen de España (8), el 16% de Dinamarca (2), República Dominicana (1) y Finlandia (1), respectivamente. Resultados: De los 12 artículos revisados, 10/12 artículos muestran que el carbón activado administrado durante la primera hora después de ingerida la droga, redujo el efecto sobre la droga a 48.5%, siendo un resultado estadísticamente significativo. Conclusiones: El carbón activado es eficaz para el manejo de la intoxicación gástrica en adultos, cuando se aplica dentro de la primera hora.
