Nursing knowledge and practice on pressure injuries in the intensive care unit

Abstract

The intensive care area has special relevance within hospital facilities, as it accommodates patients who are in critical condition and require constant nursing care. This scenario is exacerbated in the case of older adults, due to their vulnerability, even more so if they must remain in this area for long periods of time, since the skin is much more sensitive to the appearance of lesions that vary in severity. In this context, insufficient knowledge and practice on the prevention of pressure ulcers has been detected, a reality that can generate complications in the health of these patients and even lead to their death. OBJECTIVE: to determine the relationship between knowledge and nursing practice on the prevention of pressure ulcers in older adults admitted to the intensive care of a hospital in Essalud, 2022. MATERIALS AND METHODS: It will be quantitative, basic, non-experimental design and transversal, with descriptive - correlational scope. 80 nurses will participate. The instruments will be a questionnaire and a checklist that will measure the variables knowledge and practice on pressure ulcer prevention.

El ámbito de cuidados intensivos encierra especial relevancia dentro de las instalaciones hospitalarias, pues acoge a pacientes que se encuentran en estado crítico y que requieren de cuidados enfermeros constantes. Este panorama se agudiza en el caso de adultos mayores, debido a su vulnerabilidad, más aún si deben mantenerse por largos periodos de tiempo en este ámbito, ya que la piel es mucho más sensible a la aparición de lesiones que varían en gravedad. En ese contexto, se ha detectado insuficientes conocimientos y práctica sobre prevención de úlceras por presión, realidad que puede generar complicaciones en la salud de estos pacientes e incluso decantar en su fallecimiento. OBJETIVO: determinar cuál es la relación entre los conocimientos y la práctica de enfermería sobre prevención de úlceras por presión en adultos mayores internados en cuidados intensivos de un hospital de Essalud, 2022. MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS: Será cuantitativa, de tipo básica, diseño no experimental y transversal, con alcance descriptivo - correlacional. Participarán 80 enfermeros. Los instrumentos serán un cuestionario y una lista de chequeo que medirán las variables conocimiento y práctica sobre prevención de úlceras por presión.
