Critical review: effectiveness of iron supplementation in pediatric patients.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to develop a critical review of articles, clinical studies and scientific literature, using the Evidence-Based Nutrition (Cloud) methodology, concerning the effectiveness of Iron Supplementation in pediatric patients. The same ones that contribute to answering the clinical question asked: Is clinical intervention with iron supplements effective in pediatric patients? A systematic search for articles was carried out in a precise and non-repetitive manner using Pubmed/MEDLINE, Embase, WOS, and Scopus as databases. Finding 25 articles, 25 being selected, which have been evaluated by the CASPE critical reading tool, finally selecting the Systematic Review entitled “Effectiveness of iron polymaltose complex in treatment and prevention of iron deficiency anemia in children”, which has a level of evidence I and Grade of Strong Recommendation, according to the researcher's expertise, the critical comment allowed us to conclude that the results did not allow a clear conclusion. There was moderate to high certainty evidence that ferrous sulphate is superior to polymaltose iron complex, with clinically significant evidence in improving hemoglobin and ferritin levels in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia in children.

La hiperglicemia, resistencia a la insulina y la hipertrigliceridemia cuadros característicos de la diabetes mellitus están íntimamente relacionado con un mayor daño cardiovascular y esto conlleva a una mayor tasa de morbimortalidad, menor calidad de vida y un mayor costo en el sistema de atención de salud. El objetivo fue analizar el efecto de la suplementación con omega-3 en la reducción del riesgo de desarrollar enfermedad cardiovascular en adultos con diabetes mellitus. Se utilizó la metodología Nutrición Basada en Evidencia (NuBE). La búsqueda de información se realizó en PUBMED, SCIENCE DIRECT, encontrando 165 artículos, siendo seleccionados 11 que han sido evaluados por la herramienta para lectura crítica CASPE, seleccionándose finalmente el artículo “An omega-3 fatty acid plasma index ≥4% prevents progression of coronary artery plaque in patients with coronary artery disease on statin treatment”, el cual posee un nivel de evidencia A I y Grado de Recomendación Fuerte. Como conclusión, la suplementación con ácidos grasos omega-3 en dosis de entre 1 a 4 g/día no respaldan las recomendaciones de utilizar en personas con diabetes mellitus y/o con antecedentes de cardiopatía coronaria para la prevención o reducción de cardiopatía coronaria fatal, infarto de miocardio no fatal o cualquier otro evento cardiovascular.
