Effectiveness of palliative care in intensive care

Abstract

Objective: Review and systematize the effectiveness of palliative care in the intensive care unit. Material and Methods: Systematic observational and retrospective quantitative review, subjected to critical selection, using the Grade evaluation system to identify the degree of evidence, found in the following databases: PubMed, Sciencedirect, Scielo, Wiley Online Library, Elsevier, Epistemonikos. Of the 10 articles systematically reviewed, 80% (n= 8/10) are systematic reviews and 20% (n= 2/10) are meta-analyses. According to the results obtained from the systematic review carried out in the present study, they come from the USA (30%), followed by Brazil (30%), Spain (20%), Italy (10%) and Germany (10%). Results: Likewise, of the evidence found, 60% (n=06/10) indicate the effectiveness of palliative care in the intensive care unit. Conclusion: palliative care in the intensive care unit is effective since it provides benefits to the patient and family with regard to their timely treatment of pain and taking into account its biopsychosocial-spiritual aspect.

Objetivo: Revisar y sistematizar la efictividad de los cuidados paliativos en la unidad de cuidados intensivos. Material y Métodos: Revisión sistemática observacional y retrospectiva de tipo cuantitativa, sometidos a selección critica, utilizando el sistema de evaluación Grade para la identificación del grado de evidencia, hallados en las siguientes bases de datos: PubMed, Sciencedirect, Scielo, Wiley Online Library, Elsevier, Epistemonikos. De los 10 artículos revisados sistemáticamente el 80% (n= 8/10) son revisiones sistemáticas y el 20% (n= 2/10) son metaanálisis. Según los resultados obtenidos de la revisión sistemática realizada en el presente estudio, proceden de los países EEUU (30%), seguida de Brasil (30%), España (20%), Italia (10%) y Alemania (10%). Resultados: Asimismo de las evidencias encontradas, el 60% (n=06/10) señalan la efectividad de los cuidados paliativos en la unidad de cuidados intensivos. Conclusión: los cuidados paliativos en la unidad de cuidados intensivos son efectivos ya que porporciona beneficio al paciente y a la familia con lo que respecta a su tratamiento oportuno ante el dolor y teniendo en cuenta su aspecto biopsicosocioesperitual.
