Effectiveness of changing the peripheral venous catheter in the prevention of phlebitis

Abstract

Objective: Systematize the available evidence on the effectiveness of changing the peripheral venous catheter for the prevention of phlebitis. Methodology: The study carried out is a Systematic Review of 10 articles in the LILACS, SCIELO, MEDLINE, and PUBMED databases, whose search has been restricted to articles with full text, and the selected articles were subjected to a critical reading, using the Jover's evaluation to identify its level of evidence. Results: In the review of the Articles, the effectiveness of changing the peripheral venous catheter to prevent phlebitis is observed; However, in the latest studies carried out, the permanence time of peripheral devices does not show the cause of the origin of vascular complications such as phlebitis, in relation to the systematic change and replacement due to clinical indication in adult patients with intravenous treatment. Conclusion: The evidence shows that to prevent phlebitis in hospitalized patients, changing the peripheral venous catheter does not necessarily require routine change every 72 hours, but rather when clinically indicated. Most of the studies reviewed provide input to the nursing professional and health institutions shared benefits. patient safety, reduction in procedures and time in care and reduction in costs

Objetivo: Sistematizar las evidencias disponibles sobre la efectividad del cambio de catéter venoso periférico para la prevención de flebitis. Metodología: El estudio realizado se trata de una Revisión Sistemática de 10 artículos en base de datos LILACS, SCIELO, MEDLINE, PUBMED, cuya búsqueda se ha restringido a artículos con texto completo, y los artículos seleccionados se sometieron a una lectura crítica, utilizando la evaluación de Jover para identificar su grado de evidencia. Resultados: En la revisión de los Artículos se observa la efectividad del cambio del catéter venoso periférico para prevenir flebitis; sin embargo, en los últimos estudios realizados el tiempo de permanencia de los dispositivos periféricos no se evidencia la causa del origen de las complicaciones vasculares como es la flebitis, en relación al cambio sistemático y al reemplazo por indicación clínica en pacientes adultos con tratamiento endovenoso. Conclusión: Las evidencias demuestran que para prevenir la flebitis en pacientes hospitalizados el cambio del catéter venoso periférico no necesariamente sea el rutinario de realizarlo cada 72 horas si no cuando esté clínicamente indicado, la mayoría de los estudios revisados dan como aporte al profesional de enfermería y a las instituciones de salud beneficios compartidos-. seguridad del paciente, disminución de procedimiento y tiempo en la atención y disminución de costos
