Anxiety and depression in older adults with diabetes mellitus and/or high blood pressure who attend the outpatient clinic of a hospital in Metropolitan Lima, 2024

Abstract

Throughout the course of the illness, older people experience a multitude of emotional responses, often manifesting as anxiety and/or depression. A predominant feeling among them is fear of what awaits them: the uncertainty, the potential for pain and the risk of complications that could deteriorate their physical well-being, strip them of their independence or even cause death. In this study we seek to examine the correlation between anxiety and depression among older adults with diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure who attend the outpatient clinic of a Hospital in Metropolitan Lima, 2023. The research will use a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional approach. Sectional correlational methodology. The complete sample will be made up of 88 older adults. To evaluate our objectives, we will use the Beck Anxiety Scale (BAI) to measure the first variable and the Yesavage Geriatric Depression Scale to measure the second variable. Analysis of the results will involve the use of Spearman's Rho parametric correlation test.

A lo largo del curso de la enfermedad, las personas mayores experimentan una multitud de respuestas emocionales, que a menudo se manifiestan como ansiedad y/o depresión. Un sentimiento predominante entre ellos es el miedo a lo que les espera: la incertidumbre, el potencial de dolor y el riesgo de complicaciones que podrían deteriorar su bienestar físico, despojarlos de su independencia o incluso provocarles la muerte. En este estudio buscamos examinar la correlación entre ansiedad y depresión entre adultos mayores con diabetes mellitus e hipertensión arterial que acuden a la consulta externa de un Hospital de Lima Metropolitana, 2023. La investigación empleará un enfoque cuantitativo, descriptivo, transversal. Metodología correlacional seccional. La muestra completa estará conformada por 88 adultos mayores. Para evaluar nuestros objetivos, utilizaremos la Escala de Ansiedad de Beck (BAI) para medir la primera variable y la Escala de Depresión Geriátrica de Yesavage para medir la segunda variable. El análisis de los resultados implicará el uso de la prueba de correlación paramétrica Rho de Spearman.
