Relationship between family functionality and alcohol consumption in adolescent students

Abstract

Objective: "To determine the relationship between family functionality and alcohol consumption among adolescent schoolchildren." Material and Method: The study is quantitative, descriptive, and correlational, with a cross-sectional design. Two instruments were used: the Family Apgar Test by Smilkstein to assess family functionality, and a custom instrument based on a Likert scale to measure alcohol consumption in adolescents aged 14 to 18. The study population consisted of 75 students. Results: The study found a direct relationship between alcohol consumption and family functionality, with a Contingency Correlation test result of 0.385. Regarding family functionality, 38.7% showed mild dysfunction, 26.7% showed severe dysfunction, 20% showed moderate dysfunction, and only 14.7% had no dysfunction. In terms of alcohol consumption, 88% reported drinking alcohol, while 12% did not. The conclusion is that there is a direct relationship between family functionality and alcohol consumption. Most adolescent students have consumed alcohol at some point. Regarding family functionality, a higher percentage of households exhibited mild dysfunction, followed by severe dysfunction, with a small percentage of families having normal functionality.

Objetivo: “Determinar la relación entre la funcionalidad familiar y el consumo de alcohol en los escolares adolescentes”. Material y método: El tipo de estudio es cuantitativo descriptivo correlacional, diseño de corte transversal; se utilizaron dos instrumentos el Test de Apgar familiar de Smilkstein para evaluar la funcionalidad familiar; y se construyó un instrumento en base a una escala tipo Likert, para medir el consumo de alcohol en adolescentes de 14 a 18 años de edad. La población de estudio fueron 75 alumnos. Resultados: Establece que existe una relación directa entre el consumo de alcohol y la funcionalidad familiar mediante la prueba de Correlación de Contingencia= 0,385. En relación a funcionalidad familiar 38.7% tienen disfunción leve, 26.7% disfunción severa, 20% disfunción moderada, y solo 14.7 % no presentan disfunción. En consumo de alcohol el 88% ingiere alcohol y el 12% no. Se concluye que existe relación directa entre funcionalidad familiar y el consumo de alcohol, la mayoría de los escolares adolescentes han ingerido alcohol en algún momento. Respecto a funcionalidad familiar se observa un mayor porcentaje de hogares con disfunción leve, seguido por disfunción severa y un mínimo porcentaje de familias con funcionalidad normal.
