Relationship between the posterior discrepancy and the intermolar angle in adolescent patients with skeletal malocclusion I, II and III, treated at the FAP Oral Health Institute, Lima, 2019 -2022

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between posterior discrepancy and intermolar angle in adolescent patients with skeletal malocclusion I, II, and III, treated at the Instituto de Salud Oral (ISOFAP, Lima, 2019-2022). The study method was hypothetical deductive, with a quantitative approach and a basic, retrospective, cross-sectional, and observational type. The design was non-experimental, descriptive, and correlational. The population consisted of lateral radiographs (taken between 2019 and 2022) from patients treated at ISOFAP, and the sample was non-randomly selected for convenience, with 160 lateral radiographs. The sample met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The technique used was observation, and a data collection sheet validated by expert judgment and the reliability test using Cohen's Kappa Index was employed. Results showed a weak negative correlation between posterior discrepancy and the intermolar angle in adolescent patients with skeletal malocclusion I, II, and III, with a Spearman rho coefficient of -0.141. Furthermore, this relationship was not statistically significant, as the p-value was 0.078 (p > 0.05). El estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar la relación entre la discrepancia posterior y el ángulo intermolar en pacientes adolescentes con maloclusión esquelética I, II y III, atendidos en el Instituto de Salud Oral (ISOFAP, Lima, 2019 – 2022. El método del estudio fue el hipotético deductivo, de enfoque cuantitativo y de tipo básica, retrospectivo, transversal y observacional; el diseño fue no experimental descriptivo correlacional. La población estuvo conformada por radiografía laterales (tomadas en los años 2019 a 2022), pertenecientes a los pacientes atendidos en el ISOFAP; y la muestra fue obtenida de manera no aleatoria por conveniencia, siendo 160 radiografías laterales, además dicha muestra cumplió con los criterios de inclusión y exclusión. La técnica utilizada en el fue la observación; empleándose como instrumento una ficha de recolección de datos, validado mediante Juicio de expertos y la prueba de confiabilidad por el Índice de Kappa de Cohen. Resultados, se apreció una correlación débil y negativa entre la discrepancia posterior y el ángulo intermolar en los pacientes adolescentes con maloclusión esquelética I, II y III, por ser el coeficiente rho de Spearman -0.141; asimismo, esta relación no es estadísticamente significativa, por hallarse por un p-valor de 0.078 (p>0.05). Se concluye que no existe una relación significativa entre la discrepancia posterior y el ángulo intermolar.
