Hemoglobin variation during an educational intervention in children 6 to 35 months of age attended in health facilities of the first level of care MINSA in the district of San Juan de Lurigancho, Lima, Peru, 2023

Abstract

Anemia is a severe public health problem in Peru, and its magnitude has not changed in the last 10 years. In Metropolitan Lima, it remains unchanged, despite state efforts, and the consequences it causes. The general objective of the study was to analyze the variation of hemoglobin during an educational intervention in children aged 6 to 35 months attending 2 primary health care centers in San Juan de Lurigancho, Peru, 2023. The intervention consisted of 3 group educational sessions over 3 months (topics: anemia and iron-rich foods, complementary feeding, and hand washing, reinforcing both topics), followed by in-person consultations, virtual follow-up via social media weekly or bi-weekly, and the distribution of powdered blood with instructions to consume 5g daily, the amount needed to meet daily iron requirements for this population. The median hemoglobin at the start was 10.6 g/dL, and at the end, it was 11.5 g/dL, with a statistically significant difference. The level of hemoglobin variation of 0.5g/dL or more was 60.5%. It was concluded that the educational intervention led to a significant variation in hemoglobin levels in children aged 6 to 35 months.

La anemia es un severo problema de salud pública en el Perú, y su magnitud no ha cambiado en los últimos 10 años. En Lima Metropolitana tampoco, pese a los esfuerzos del estado, y a las secuelas que esta produce. El objetivo general del estudio fue analizar la variación de la hemoglobina durante una intervención educativa en niños de 6 a 35 meses de edad atendidos en 2 establecimientos de salud del primer nivel de atención en San Juan de Lurigancho – Perú, 2023. La intervención consistió en 3 sesiones educativas presenciales grupales durante 3 meses (temas: anemia y alimentos ricos en hierro, alimentación complementaria y lavado de manos, refuerzo de ambos temas), seguimiento presencial en consultorio, seguimiento virtual semanal-quincenal vía redes sociales, y entrega de sangrecita en polvo con indicación de consumir 5g diarios, cantidad suficiente para cubrir los requerimientos diarios de hierro de esta población. La mediana de hemoglobina al inicio fue de 10.6 gr/dL y al final 11.5 gr/dL, siendo estadísticamente significativa la diferencia. El nivel de variación de hemoglobina de 0.5g/dL a más, fue de 60.5%. Se concluye que la intervención educativa ha generado una variación significativa en la hemoglobina en los niños de 6 a 35 meses.
