Level of knowledge and self-care practices in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in a hospital in East Lima, 2023

Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that destabilizes the individual's quality of life; The level of knowledge about the disease is discovered with the experiences lived, in the same way self-care practices are activities that one carries out to maintain, reinforce and/or recover one's well-being. Objective: “Determine the relationship between the level of knowledge and self-care in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in a hospital in Lima Este, 2023.” Methodology: It is research with a hypothetical-deductive method, with a quantitative approach, of an applied type, with a non-experimental design. The research involved 80 patients with a medical diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus from a hospital in Eastern Lima in 2023. Two instruments were applied: level of knowledge developed by Amaya in 2017 with a Pearson coefficient validity of 0.85; and self-care practices developed by Tuyo in 2015 that was valid through the judgment of 3 experts. Conclusion: A significant, positive, and moderate relationship was found between the level of knowledge about self-care practices because the p value was 0.000 and the Rho Spearman value was 0.513*.

Introducción: La diabetes mellitus es una enfermedad crónica que desestabiliza la calidad de vida del individuo; el nivel de conocimiento sobre la enfermedad se descubre con las experiencias vividas, del mismo modo las prácticas de autocuidado son actividades que uno mismo realiza para mantener, reforzar y/o recuperar su bienestar. Objetivo: “Determinar la relación entre el nivel de conocimiento y autocuidado en pacientes con diabetes mellitus tipo 2 en un hospital de Lima Este, 2023”. Metodología: Es una investigación de método hipotético- deductivo, de enfoque cuantitativo, de tipo aplicada, de diseño no experimental. La investigación tuvo la participación de 80 pacientes con diagnostico medico de diabetes mellitus tipo 2 de un hospital de Lima Este en el 2023. Se aplico 2 instrumentos: nivel de conocimiento elaborado por Amaya en el 2017 con una validez de coeficiente de Pearson de 0.85; y prácticas de autocuidado elaborado por Tuyo en el 2015 que tuvo validez mediante el juicio de 3 expertos. Conclusión: Se hallo relación significativa, positiva y moderada entre el nivel de conocimiento sobre las practicas de autocuidado debido a que el valor p fue de 0,000 y el valor de Rho Spearman de 0.513*.
