Stress and anxiety in end-stage cancer patients at a specialized national institution in Lima, 2023

Abstract

Cancer, starting from a psycho-emotional approach, is a pathology with a great burden of personal and family affliction. The problem was selected because cancer is not only a chronic pathology that manages to threaten the life of the individual due to the idea of being close to death, but also decreases their ability to control their lives and having to be governed by therapies in order to survive, this makes him vulnerable to different psychological reactions such as guilt, anxiety and stress. The present academic work is developed with the purpose of evaluating the association between stress and anxiety in cancer patients in terminal stage of the National Institute of Neoplastic Diseases - Lima, 2021. Using the hypothetical deductive study methodology, with a quantitative approach, observational type with crosssectional and non-experimental correlational descriptive design; likewise, a population of 100 end-stage cancer patients will be considered, from which a representative sample will not be drawn. To collect the information, the survey technique will be applied and as instruments two Likert structure questionnaires, a stress response questionnaire or inventory, made up of 33 questions grouped into three dimensions referring to cognitive, emotional and physiological reactions, with 0.910 reliability; and to measure anxiety, the structured Zung Scale will be used with 20 questions distributed in two dimensions referring to affective symptoms and somatic symptoms with a reliability of 0.770; Both instruments having prior validation. The relationship between both variables will be measured by Spearman's rank correlation coefficient for nominal scales.

El cáncer, partiendo de un enfoque psico emocional es una patología con gran carga de aflicción personal y familiar. La problemática fue seleccionada porque, el cáncer no solamente es considerada como patología crónica la cual logra amenazar la vida del individuo por la creencia de tener cercana la muerte, además disminuye la capacidad de controlar su vida y tener que estar dependiente de terapias para poder sobrevivir, esto lo torna vulnerable a distintas reacciones psicológicas como cuadros de culpa, ansiedad y estrés. Este trabajo académico se realizará para evaluar la asociación entre el estrés y ansiedad en pacientes con cáncer en etapa terminal de un instituto nacional especializado de Lima. Se empleará el método enfoque hipotético deductivo, cuantitativa, investigación aplicada, no experimental, nivel correlacional y transversal; asimismo, se contará con la participación de 100 pacientes oncológicos en etapa terminal como población, del cual no se extraerá una muestra representativa. Para la recopilación de datos se aplicará la encuesta en calidad de técnica y para los instrumentos serán dos cuestionarios de estructura Likert, a saber: un cuestionario o inventario de respuesta al estrés, compuesta por 33 preguntas agrupadas en tres dimensiones (reacciones cognitivas, emocionales y fisiológicas); y para medir la ansiedad se usará la Escala de Zung estructurado con 20 preguntas distribuidas en dos dimensiones (síntomas afectivos y síntomas somáticos); teniendo ambos instrumentos validación previa. La correlación entre ambas variables será medida por el coeficiente de correlación de rango de Spearman para escalas nominales.
