Efficacy of audiovisual training on deleterious oral habits in primary school teachers of the San Pablo Apóstol Educational Center, Lima 2019

Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine the effectiveness of audiovisual training on deleterious oral habits at the San Pablo Apóstol educational center, Lima, 2019. It was a quasi-experimental, descriptive, and longitudinal study. The sample consisted of 30 primary school teachers, with 15 teachers receiving audiovisual training and 15 teachers receiving a lecture. The audiovisual training involved projecting images, videos, and clinical cases about the habit of mouth breathing and atypical swallowing. The lecture consisted of a verbal presentation without visual aids on the aforementioned habits. Before and after the training, the teachers completed a 15-question questionnaire, previously validated by expert judgment, to measure knowledge about deleterious oral habits. Additionally, they identified the sequelae in patients with mouth breathing and atypical swallowing using images. The results were analyzed using the Student’s t-test, with a significance level of 0.05%. The results showed that the teachers who received audiovisual training increased their knowledge level from 20% to 73.3%. In contrast, the teachers who received the lecture did not show an improvement in their knowledge.

El objetivo de la investigación fue determinar la eficacia de la capacitación audiovisual sobre hábitos bucales deletéreos en el centro educativo San Pablo Apóstol, Lima 2019. Fue un estudio cuasi experimental, descriptivo y longitudinal. La muestra estuvo conformada por 30 docentes de primaria, de los cuales 15 docentes fueron capacitados con la técnica audiovisual y 15 docentes mediante una charla. La capacitación audiovisual consistió en proyectar imágenes, videos y casos clínicos sobre el hábito de respiración bucal y deglución atípica. La charla consistió en exponer sin ayuda visual sobre los hábitos ya mencionados. Los docentes antes y después de recibir la capacitación desarrollaron un cuestionario de 15 preguntas previamente validado por juicio de expertos para medir el conocimiento sobre hábitos bucales deletéreos, asimismo, mediante imágenes identificaron las secuelas que se presentan en los pacientes con respiración bucal y deglución atípica. Para el análisis de los resultados se utilizó la prueba estadística T de student considerando un nivel de significancia del 0,05%. Los resultados obtenidos en los docentes que recibieron la capacitación audiovisual se logró elevar el nivel de conocimiento de 20% a 73.3%. Por otro lado, los docentes que recibieron la charla no demostraron mejorar su nivel de conocimiento.
