Level of knowledge and attitude regarding solid waste management in nursing staff of the emergency service of the Dos de Mayo National Hospital, Lima 2023

The present study aims to determine the relationship between the level of knowledge and attitude towards solid waste management among nursing staff in the emergency department of Hospital Nacional Dos de Mayo, Lima 2023. Methodologically, a hypothetical-deductive, applied, quantitative, cross-sectional, non-experimental, and correlational method was employed. The study involved a population of 70 participants, and the sample size was the same, as it was a census. Questionnaires were used as instruments for each variable. The results showed that 81.4% of the participants were female, 35.7% were between 31 and 40 years old, 41.4% were cohabiting, and the majority (30.0%) had 4 to 5 years of work experience. Moreover, the level of knowledge was mainly high in 75.7%, and the attitude towards solid waste management was high in 52.9%. Statistically, it was confirmed that the dimensions of general knowledge, conditioning, segregation, and primary storage were significantly related to the attitude towards solid waste management (r=0.615, r=0.573, and r=0.533, respectively), with a significance level below 5% in all cases. In conclusion, the level of knowledge and attitude towards solid waste management are significantly related, as evidenced by the obtained significance value being below 5% (p < 0.05) and a correlation coefficient "Rho de spearman" of 0.775. Therefore, a higher level of knowledge leads to a better attitude towards solid waste management. This study sheds light on the importance of knowledge and its impact on fostering positive attitudes among nursing staff, which could ultimately contribute to improving solid waste management practices in the emergency department of Hospital Nacional Dos de Mayo.
Resumen
El presente estudio tiene por objetivo determinar la relación entre el nivel de conocimiento y actitud sobre manejo de desechos sólidos en personal de enfermería del servicio de emergencia del Hospital Nacional Dos de Mayo, Lima 2023. Para ello metodológicamente fue estructurado aplicado un método hipotético deductivo, aplicado, cuantitativo, transversal, no experimental y correlacional, conformado por 70 participantes como población y la muestra se integró por la misma cantidad al ser censal, mientras que como instrumento serán aplicados cuestionarios por cada variable. Los resultados mostraron que el 81.4% era del género femenino, el 35.7% tenía entre 31 a 40 años, el 41.4% era conviviente y el tiempo laboral fue de 4 a 5 años mayoritariamente en un 30.0%, además, el nivel de conocimiento fue principalmente alto en un 75.7% y la actitud sobre el manejo de desechos sólidos fue alto en un 52.9%, estadísticamente, se comprobó que las dimensiones conocimientos generales, el acondicionamiento, la segregación y almacenamiento primario, se relacionaron significativamente con la actitud sobre manejo de desechos sólidos (r=0.615; r= 0.573 y r=0.533) con una significancia menor al 5% en todos los casos. Se concluye que el nivel de conocimiento y actitud sobre manejo de desechos sólidos se relacionan significativamente, debido a que el valor de significancia obtenido es menor al 5% (p < 0.05) y el coeficiente de correlación "Rho de Spearman" es de 0.775, por tanto, mientras mayor sea el nivel de conocimiento mejor será la actitud sobre el manejo de desechos sólidos.
