Susceptibility profile of Escherichia coli in urinary tract infection in women of reproductive age at the Madre Niño San Bartolomé Teaching Hospital, from 2013 to 2017

Abstract

Objective: To determine the susceptibility profile of Escherichia coli in urinary tract infections in women of reproductive age at the Hospital Docente Madre Niño San Bartolomé, from 2013 to 2017. Methods: This is a quantitative, retrospective, and descriptive study of all urine cultures performed on pregnant patients during the stated period. The variable evaluated is the susceptibility profile of Escherichia coli against different antimicrobials in women of reproductive age with urinary tract infections. Data were obtained using mean and frequency statistics in percentage. Results: Of the 66,089 urine cultures processed during the study period from 2013 to 2017, 5,934 (8.98%) were positive for Escherichia coli isolation. The year with the lowest number of isolations was 2013, with 11,592 urine cultures and 956 isolations (8.25%). In 2014, from 12,342 urine cultures, 1,186 (9.6%) were positive for isolation. Conclusions: The highest antimicrobial resistance was observed against ampicillin (67.1%), trimethoprim + sulfamethoxazole (54.3%), and ciprofloxacin (47.9%), while resistance against amikacin and imipenem was low, between 0% and 1.8%. Regarding ESBL, the frequency trend showed an increase in 2016 (40.2%), compared to 2013 (18.2%).

Objetivo: Determinar el perfil de susceptibilidad de Escherichia coli en infección tracto urinario en mujeres de edad reproductiva en el Hospital Docente Madre Niño San Bartolomé, en el periodo del 2013 a 2017. Métodos: Es una investigación cuantitativa, retrospectiva y descriptiva a todos los urocultivos realizados a las pacientes gestantes en la institución hospitalaria y periodo de tiempo declarados. Se evalúa la variable: perfil de susceptibilidad de Escherichia coli frente a diferentes antimicrobianos en mujeres de edad reproductiva con infección del tracto urinario. Las datas fueron obtenidas mediante la estadística de media y frecuencia en porcentaje. Resultados: Del total de 66089 urocultivos procesados durante el periodo de estudio que abarca los años 2013 al 2017; 5934 correspondiente al 8,98% fuerón positivos al aislamiento de Escherichia coli, de la cual distribuidos en años quien tuvo menor número de aislamientos fue el año 2013, de 11592 urocultivos, el número de aislamiento fue 956(8,25%); en el año 2014, de 12342 urocultivos, el número de aislamiento fue 1186(9,6%). Conclusiones: La mayor resistencia antimicrobiana se evidencia en la ampicilina (67,1%), trimetoprim + sulfametoxazol (54,3%), ciprofloxacino (47,9%); menor resistencia antimicrobiana frente a amikacina, imipenem, con porcentajes entre 0% al 1,8%. Con respecto a BLEE, se observa la tendencia de evolución de la frecuencia de BLEE en el año 2016(40,2%), en el año 2013(18,2%).
