Efficacy of chlorhexidine gluconate vs povidone iodine to prevent infections in the surgical wound of the surgical patient

Abstract

Systematic Review, in which 9 articles were selected; those that were analyzed and subjected to evaluation according to the GRADE system to identify their quality of evidence and strength of recommendation; The search strategy was in the Cochrane Group, Lilacs and Pubmed. According to the selected articles, we find that 60% (5/9) are from the United States; 10% (1/9) is from the United Kingdom, India, Brazil and Bolivia respectively. Of the articles analyzed, 70% affirm that chlorhexidine gluconate is more effective in preventing infections in the surgical wound of the surgical patient; However, the other 30% affirm that there is no significant difference between both antiseptics. Conclusion: In the Systematic Reviews it was shown that there is greater effectiveness of chlorhexidine in preventing infections in the surgical wound compared to povidone-iodine.

Revisión Sistemática, en el que se seleccionaron 9 artículos; los que fueron analizados y sometidos a la evaluación según el sistema GRADE para identificar su calidad de evidencia y fuerza de recomendación; la estrategia de búsqueda fue en el Grupo Cochrane, Lilacs y Pubmed. Según los artículos seleccionados, encontramos que el 60%(5/9) son de Estados Unidos; el 10%(1/9) es de Reino Unido, India, Brasil y Bolivia respectivamente. Totales de artículos analizados el 70% afirma que el gluconato de clorhexidina es más eficaz para prevenir infecciones en la herida operatoria del paciente quirúrgico; sin embargo, el otro 30% afirman que no existe diferencia significativa entre ambos antisépticos.Conclusión: En las Revisiones Sistemáticas se evidenció que existe mayor efectividad de la clorhexidina en la prevención de infecciones en la herida operatoria en comparación con la yodopovidona.
