Retention of Volunteer Blood Donors at Cayetano Heredia Hospital, Experience at a Private University, 2012 - 2016

Abstract

It is very important for voluntary blood donors in our country to be retained. Objective: The percentage of retained voluntary blood donors was determined. Materials and methods: Information was collected from the blood donor registration notebook of the hospital studied during the period 2012-2016, using a data collection form. The research is descriptive, retrospective, and cross-sectional. Main results: The percentage determined from a total population of 1,182 voluntary blood donors was classified according to their level of commitment. First place was for first-time donors (71.8%), second place for donors in the retention period (24.9%), third place for retained donors (3.3%), and finally, supporters and committed donors (0%). Conclusions: The determined percentage of retained voluntary blood donors is 3.3%, which does not exceed the estimated hypothesis goal (≥ 5%). On the other hand, it is evident that donors in the retention period with 2 to 4 donations represent 24.9% of potential future retained donors, and strategies should be established to maintain their participation and commitment as altruistic and retained voluntary donors in our country.

Es muy importante que los donantes voluntarios de sangre de nuestro país sean fidelizados. Objetivo: se determinó el porcentaje de donantes voluntarios de sangre fidelizados. Materiales y métodos: Se recolecto la información del cuaderno de registro de donantes voluntarios de sangre del Hospital en estudio durante el periodo 2012 – 2016, empleando una ficha de recolección de datos. La investigación es de tipo: descriptiva, retrospectiva y transversal. Principales resultados: El porcentaje determinado de una población total de 1,182 donantes voluntarios de sangre fidelizados de acuerdo a su grado de compromiso. Se ubicó en primer lugar, donante por primera vez (71.8%), en segundo lugar, donante en periodo de fidelización (24.9%), en tercer lugar, donante fidelizado (3.3%) y finalmente, donante partidario y comprometido (0%). Conclusiones: El porcentaje determinado de donantes voluntarios de sangre fidelizados es 3.3%, el cual no supera la meta estimada de hipótesis (≥ 5%). Por otro lado, se evidencia que los donantes en periodo de fidelización de 2 a 4 donaciones, representa el (24.9%) de probables donantes fidelizados a futuro, debiéndose establecer estrategias para mantener su participación y compromiso hacia el prójimo como donante voluntario altruista y fidelizado en nuestro país.
