Efficacy of turmeric in chronic kidney disease patients to reduce progressive kidney deterioration

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Systematize the evidence on the effectiveness of turmeric in patients with chronic kidney disease to reduce the progressive deterioration of the kidneys. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The study has a systematic, observational and retrospective review design; of articles with full text, which identified their grade or quality of evidence according to the Grade System. Likewise, the population was made up of 10 articles obtained from the following databases Pubmed, Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, Dialnet, Scielo, and Lilacs. Of which 60% correspond to randomized clinical studies and 40% to systematic review design, corresponding to the countries of Iran 30%, Switzerland 10%, Germany 10%, China 10%, Spain 10%, Canada 10%, Chile 10 % and Mexico 10%. RESULTS: Of the 10 articles reviewed, 100% demonstrate the effectiveness of turmeric in patients with chronic kidney disease to reduce the progressive deterioration of the kidneys. CONCLUSIONS: Of the 10 articles reviewed, 10 out of 10 show that turmeric in patients with chronic kidney disease is effective in reducing the functional deterioration of the kidneys; with nephroprotective effects, preventing the progression of kidney disease, with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties; therefore, leading them to improve their quality of life.

OBJETIVO: Sistematizar las evidencias sobre la eficacia de la cúrcuma en pacientes con enfermedad renal crónica para disminuir el deterioro progresivo de los riñones. MATERIAL Y MÉTODO: El estudio es de diseño de revisión sistemática, observacional y retrospectivo; de artículos con texto completo, que identificó su grado o calidad de la evidencia según el Sistema Grade. Asimismo, la población estuvo conformada por 10 artículos obtenidos de la siguiente base de datos Pubmed, Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, Dialnet, Scielo, y Lilacs. De los cuales el 60% corresponden a estudios clínicos aleatorizados y 40% de diseño de revisión sistemática, correspondientes a países de Irán 30%, Suiza 10%, Alemania 10%, China 10%, España 10%, Canadá 10%, Chile 10% y México 10%. RESULTADOS: De los 10 artículos revisados, el 100% demuestran la eficacia de la cúrcuma en pacientes con enfermedad renal crónica para disminuir el deterioro progresivo de los riñones. CONCLUSIONES: De los 10 artículos revisados, 10 de 10 evidencian que la cúrcuma en pacientes con enfermedad renal crónica es eficaz para disminuir el deterioro funcional de los riñones; con efectos nefroprotectores evitando la progresión de la enfermedad renal, con propiedades antiinflamatorias y antioxidantes; por ende, conllevándolos a que mejore su calidad de vida.
