Efficacy of probiotics in the prevention of the most frequent infections in the preterm newborn.

Abstract

90% of the 10 scientific studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the use of probiotics in preventing the most common infections in premature newborns (early sepsis and enterocolitis), while also improving oral tolerance, intestinal maturation, and increasing the weight of preterm neonates. 10% of the studies show that there is no significant difference, highlighting the need for further studies to address the combination of probiotic strains, dosage, and duration to avoid erroneous conclusions, especially in very low birth weight neonates.

El 90 % de los 10 estudios científicos, se evidencia la eficacia del uso de probióticos en la prevención de infecciones más frecuentes en el recién nacido prematuro (sepsis temprana y enterocolitis), al mismo tiempo mejora la tolerancia oral, maduración intestinal e incrementa el peso del neonato pre termino. El 10% evidencia que no hay diferencia significativa, siendo necesario realizar más estudios adicionales para abordar combinación de cepas de probióticos, dosis y duración para no conllevar a conclusiones erróneas sobre todo en neonatos de muy bajo peso.
