Frequency of dental hypersensitivity after scaling and root planing in patients treated at the dental clinic of the Norbert Wiener University, 2016-I

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of dentinal hypersensitivity following scaling and root planing in patients treated at the Dental Clinic of Universidad Norbert Wiener – 2016-I. The study was observational, prospective, cross-sectional, and descriptive. The study group consisted of 72 patients, aged 20 to 80 years, from both genders. The Huamán questionnaire was used as the instrument. The results showed that 37% of patients experienced dentinal hypersensitivity following scaling and root planing, with a higher prevalence in females (67.9%). Of those, 85.7% had mild severity, 64.3% experienced sensitivity to cold, and 3.6% did not use toothpaste to treat it. The study concluded that there is a significant relationship between the absence of dentinal hypersensitivity and dentinal hypersensitivity following scaling and root planing, as well as a significant relationship with gender (p < 0.05).

El propósito de este estudio fue determinar la frecuencia de hipersensibilidad dentinaria posterior al raspado y alisado radicular en pacientes tratados en la Clínica Odontológica de la Universidad Norbert Wiener – 2016-I. El estudio fue de tipo observacional, prospectivo, transversal y descriptivo; el grupo de estudio estuvo constituido por 72 pacientes, entre 20 y 80 años de edad de ambos géneros. Se empleó como instrumento el cuestionario de Huamán. Se tuvo como resultados que el 37% presenta hipersensibilidad dentinaria posterior al raspado y alisado radicular, predominando el género femenino con el 67.9%, 85.7% de gravedad leve 85.7%, sensibilidad al frío 64.3% y 3.6% no hacen uso de pasta dental para tratarla.

Concluyendo que existe una relación significativa entre la no presencia de hipersensibilidad dentinaria y la hipersensibilidad dentinaria posterior al raspado y alisado radicular, al igual que el género (p< 0,05).
