Effectiveness of colorectal cancer screening in reducing mortality in adults

Abstract

Objective: To systematize the evidence on the effectiveness of colorectal cancer screening in reducing mortality in asymptomatic individuals. Methodology: This was a systematic, observational, and retrospective review. The search was limited to full-text articles, subjected to critical reading, using the Grade assessment to identify their level of evidence. Of the total 100% (10) scientific articles reviewed, 40% (4) were from Spain, 10% (1) from the United Kingdom, 10% (1) from China, 10% (1) from Canada, 10% (1) from Norway, 10% (1) from the United States, and 10% (1) from the Netherlands. Results: According to the findings of the reviewed scientific studies, 9 out of 10 articles demonstrated that colorectal cancer screening is effective in reducing mortality in asymptomatic individuals. Conclusions: The systematic review allows us to evidence that colorectal cancer screening is effective in reducing mortality in asymptomatic individuals because it is a test that provides greater accuracy in the early diagnosis of colorectal cancer in its initial stages, thereby contributing to prevention, timely treatment, and increasing the chances of a cure.

Objetivo: Sistematizar las evidencias sobre la eficacia del cribado del cáncer colorrectal para disminuir la mortalidad en las personas asintomáticas. Metodología: Fue una revisión sistemática observacional y retrospectivo, la búsqueda se ha restringido a artículos con texto completo, sometidos a una lectura crítica, utilizando la evaluación de Grade para identificar su grado de evidencia. De un total del 100% (10) artículos científicos revisados, fueron de España 40% (04), Reino Unido 10% (01), China 10% (01), Canadá 10% (01), Noruega 10% (01), Estados Unidos 10% (01), y Holanda 10% (01). Resultados: De acuerdo a los hallazgos de los estudios científicos revisados, 9 de 10 artículos evidenciaron que el cribado del cáncer colorrectal es eficaz para disminuir la mortalidad en las personas asintomáticas. Conclusiones: La revisión sistemática nos permite evidenciar que el cribado del cáncer colorrectal es eficaz para disminuir la mortalidad en las personas asintomáticas; debido a que es una prueba que aporta más exactitud al diagnóstico precoz del cáncer colorrectal en sus fases iniciales, contribuyendo de esta manera a la prevención, para ser tratado oportunamente, aumentando así las probabilidades de curación.
