Factors associated with gingival melanosis in patients attending the La Libertad health center, Lima 2023

Abstract

Gingival melanosis refers to the presence of single or multiple pigmentations in the gums of individuals, being a common clinical manifestation worldwide. Objective: To determine the factors associated with gingival melanosis in patients attending the La Libertad Health Center, Lima 2023. Materials and Methods: A basic, non-experimental, observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 102 patients, using a registration and observation sheet as the data collection instrument. Results: A moderate and positive association was found between various factors and the occurrence of gingival melanosis in individuals (p = 0.611), specifically related to gender (p = 0.521), race (p = 0.612), and gingival phenotype (p = 0.639). In contrast, the age range showed a low and positive correlation (p = 0.395), and tobacco use was the factor most strongly associated with gingival melanosis, with a high positive value (p = 0.808). Conclusion: A moderate and positive relationship exists between multiple factors and gingival melanosis in patients at the La Libertad Health Center.

La melanosis gingival corresponde a la presencia de pigmentaciones únicas o múltiples en la encía de los individuos, siendo una manifestación clínica frecuente a nivel mundial. Objetivo: Determinar los factores asociados con la melanosis gingival en pacientes que asisten al centro de salud La Libertad, Lima 2023. Material y métodos: Estudio de tipo básico, no experimental, observacional, descriptivo y de corte transversal sobre una muestra conformada por 102 pacientes, tomando una ficha de registro y observación como instrumento de recolección de datos. Resultados: Se evidencia una asociación moderada y positiva entre diversos factores y la aparición de melanosis gingival en los individuos (p = 0.611), específicamente en el género (p = 0.521), la raza (p = 0.612) y el fenotipo gingival (p = 0.639). En contraparte, el rango de edad muestra una correlación baja y positiva (p = 0.395) y los hábitos tabáquicos competen al factor con mayor asociación con la melanosis gingival, totalizando en un valor alto y positivo (p = 0.808). Conclusión: Existe una relación moderada y positiva entre múltiples factores y la melanosis gingival en los pacientes del centro de salud La Libertad.
