Nutrition and nutritional status of premature newborns cared for in the Intermediate II Unit of the National Maternal Perinatal Institute, Lima - 2018

Abstract

Method: A quantitative, non-experimental, descriptive correlational cross-sectional design. The study involved 68 preterm newborns. The following instruments were used: the Feeding and Nutritional Status Record Form for Preterm Newborns (FRTAENRNPT), the Intrauterine Growth Curve for Male Sex, and the Intrauterine Growth Curve for Female Sex.

Results: 47% of the neonates were fed with fortified human milk, 37% were exclusively breastfed, and 16% were fed with premature infant formula. Regarding nutritional status, 54% were small for their gestational age (SGA), 46% were appropriate for their gestational age (AGA), and none of the infants were large for their gestational age (LGA). A statistically significant relationship was found between the type of feeding and the nutritional status of preterm infants. The non-parametric chi-square test was used, yielding a coefficient of 0.016 (p<0.05).

Conclusions: A relationship exists between the type of feeding and nutritional development. Depending on the type of milk and feeding method, nutritional development will be either adequate or inadequate.

Método: Enfoque cuantitativo de diseño no experimental, de tipo descriptivo correlacional de corte transversal. Participaron 68 recién nacidos prematuros. Se utilizaron los siguientes instrumentos: Ficha de Registro del Tipo de Alimentación y Estado Nutricional en Recién Nacidos Pretérmino (FRTAENRNPT), Curva de Crecimiento Intrauterino para Sexo Masculino y Curva de Crecimiento Intrauterino para Sexo Femenino.

Resultados: El 47% de los neonatos fueron alimentados con leche humana fortificada, el 37% se alimentaron exclusivamente con leche materna y el 16% con fórmula láctea para prematuros. Con respecto al estado nutricional, el 54% fueron pequeños para su edad gestacional (PEG), el 46% fueron adecuados para su edad gestacional (AEG) y ninguno de los niños resultó ser grande para su edad gestacional (GEG). Se encontró una relación estadísticamente significativa entre el tipo de alimentación y el estado nutricional de los nacidos prematuros. Asimismo, se empleó la prueba no paramétrica chi-cuadrado, donde se obtuvo un coeficiente de 0,016 (p<0,05).

Conclusiones: Existe una relación entre el tipo de alimentación y el desarrollo nutricional. Dependiendo del tipo de leche y tipo de alimentación, el desarrollo nutricional será adecuado o inadecuado.
