Bibliometric Analysis of Neurosurgery Research with Participation from Latin America and the Caribbean: An Approach from Scopus (1955-2022)

Abstract

Despite efforts to promote scientific production in the region, there is a significant gap in the resources allocated compared to developed countries. The aim is to identify bibliometric and thematic characteristics of the most cited articles in neurosurgery in Latin America and the Caribbean. A quantitative methodology was used for the search using Scopus, with inclusion and exclusion criteria applied. Bibliometrix and Biblioshiny App were used for bibliometric analysis and graph generation, and VOSviewer for co-authorship and keyword network maps. The results indicate an increase in scientific production in neurosurgery in the region, with an average of 21.5 citations per document and 23,893 references in the analyzed articles. A total of 1,854 keywords and 5,466 authors were identified, showing thematic and collaborative diversity. The most productive institutions include the University of São Paulo, the Federal University of São Paulo, and the State University of Campinas. Notable journals include "ARCHIVES OF NEURO-PSYCHIATRY," "SURGICAL NEUROLOGY INTERNATIONAL," and "JOURNAL OF NEUROSURGERY." The diversity of keywords suggests a wide range of research areas in neurosurgery. In conclusion, scientific production in neurosurgery in the region has significantly increased, with thematic diversity and collaborations, and key institutions and journals were identified, which may guide future research and advances in the field.

A pesar de los esfuerzos por promover la producción científica en la región, existe una brecha significativa en los recursos asignados en comparación con los países desarrollados. El objetivo es identificar características bibliométricas y temáticas de los artículos más citados en neurocirugía en América Latina y el Caribe. Para la búsqueda se utilizó una metodología cuantitativa utilizando Scopus y se aplicaron criterios de inclusión y exclusión. Se utilizaron Bibliometrix y Biblioshiny App para análisis bibliométrico y generación de gráficos, y VOSviewer para mapas de redes de coautoría y palabras clave. Los resultados indican un aumento de la producción científica en neurocirugía en la región, con un promedio de 21,5 citas por documento y 23.893 referencias en los artículos analizados. Se identificaron 1.854 palabras clave y 5.466 autores, mostrando diversidad temática y colaborativa. Las instituciones más productivas incluyen la Universidad de São Paulo, la Universidad Federal de São Paulo y la Universidad Estatal de Campinas. Se destacan como revistas importantes “ARCHIVES OF NEURO-PSIQUIATRIA”, “SURGICAL NEUROLOGY INTERNATIONAL” y “JOURNAL OF NEUROSURGERY”. La diversidad de palabras clave sugiere una amplia gama de áreas de investigación en neurocirugía. En conclusión, la producción científica en neurocirugía en la región ha experimentado un aumento significativo, con diversidad temática y colaboraciones, y se identificaron instituciones y revistas destacadas, que pueden orientar futuras investigaciones y avances en el campo.
