Knowledge of breastfeeding and breastfeeding practices in first-time mothers of the María Auxiliadora Hospital - San Juan de Miraflores - Lima, 2022

Abstract

Objective: To determine the relationship between breastfeeding and breastfeeding practices in first-time mothers of the Hospital María Auxiliadora de San Juan de Miraflores attended in the year 2022. Methodology: hypothetical-deductive study with a quantitative, non-experimental approach, in which 74 first-time mothers from the María Auxiliadora Hospital in San Juan de Miraflores participated, attended in the month of May 2022, in which their knowledge of breastfeeding was evaluated by conducting a survey. with a "Questionnaire of knowledge of breastfeeding" and their breastfeeding practices with observation through an Observation Guide to evaluate breastfeeding practices. The data were analyzed descriptively by frequencies, measures of central tendency, minimum and maximum values, and the relationship was estimated with a significance of 0.05 using the non- parametric Rho Spearman test. Results: The study sample was characterized by belonging to an age group of 18 to 22 years old (58.1%), having a secondary education (68.9%), being a cohabitant (77%) and coming from Lima (81.1%); In addition, 40.54% had low knowledge and 39.19% medium, breastfeeding practices in 97.3% were inadequate and of those who had adequate practices, 50% had medium knowledge and 50% high knowledge and of those who had inadequate practices 41.7% had low knowledge, 38.9% medium and 19.4% high; observing that both variables are not related (p=0.050), and neither the generalities dimension of the LM (p=0.080) and the benefits dimension (p=0.132) and the hygiene dimension in the LM (p=0.276) is related to breastfeeding practices. Conclusion: There is no relationship between knowledge about breastfeeding and breastfeeding practices since it was evidenced that first-time mothers have some knowledge, however there is a minimum of adequate practices on the subject.

Objetivo: Determinar la relación entre la lactancia materna y las prácticas de amamantamiento en madres primerizas del Hospital María Auxiliadora de San Juan de Miraflores atendidas en el año 2022. Metodología: investigación hipotética deductiva de enfoque cuantitativo, no experimental, en que participaron 74 madres primerizas del Hospital María Auxiliadora de San Juan de Miraflores atendidas en el mes de mayo del año 2022, en las que se evaluaron sus conocimientos de lactancia materna al realizar una encuesta con un “Cuestionario de conocimientos de la lactancia materna” y su praxis al amamantar con la observación mediante una Guía de observación para evaluar las prácticas de amamantamiento” . Los datos fueron analizados descriptivamente por frecuencias, medidas de tendencia central, valores mínimos y máximos y la relación fue estimada con una significación del 0.05 mediante la prueba no paramétrica del Rho de Spearman. Resultados: La muestra de estudio se caracterizó por pertenecer a un grupo etario de 18 a 22 años (58.1%), tener instrucción secundaria (68.9%), ser conviviente (77%) y proceder de Lima (81.1%); además el 40.54% tuvo un conocimiento bajo y el 39.19% medio, las prácticas de amamantamiento en el 97.3% fueron inadecuadas y de los que tuvieron prácticas adecuadas el 50% tuvo conocimiento medio y el 50% conocimiento alto y de los que tuvieron prácticas inadecuadas el 41.7% tuvo conocimiento bajo el 38.9% medio y el 19.4% alto; observando que ambas variables no se relacionan (p=0.050), y tampoco la dimensión generalidades de la LM (p=0.080) y la dimensión beneficios (p=0.132) y la dimensión higiene en la LM (p=0.276) se relaciona con las prácticas de amamantamiento. Conclusión: No existe relación entre los conocimientos sobre lactancia materna y las prácticas de amamantamiento puesto que se evidencia que las primerizas tienen cierto conocimiento sin embargo hay un mínimo de prácticas adecuadas sobre el tema.
