Clinical manifestations associated with neurological complications from COVID 19 in patients at the Regional Hospital of Ayacucho, 2021

Abstract

In early December 2019, a viral atypical pneumonia outbreak was reported in Wuhan, China, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus (COVID-19). The infection spread rapidly, reaching South America, and the first confirmed case in Lima, Peru, was in March 2020. The clinical manifestations of COVID-19 patients included fever (88.7%), cough (57.6%), shortness of breath or fatigue (45.6%), muscle pain (myalgia) (44%), sputum production (28%), headache (2.8%), hemoptysis (5%), and diarrhea (3%). Neurological complications at the central nervous system (CNS) level include hemorrhagic stroke, ischemic stroke, encephalopathies, encephalitis, etc.; at the peripheral nervous system (PNS) level, there are alterations in smell and taste, rhabdomyolysis, and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). The objective of this study is to determine whether there is a significant relationship between the clinical manifestations of COVID-19 and neurological complications in patients hospitalized at the Regional Hospital of Ayacucho in 2021. The method was non-experimental, descriptive-correlational-retrospective, using an epidemiological COVID-19 data collection form.

A inicios de diciembre del año 2019 se alertó en Wuhan, China un brote de neumonía atípica de origen viral; infección por coronavirus SARSCoV-2 (COVID-19), el contagio se fue expandiendo muy rápidamente en poco tiempo, hasta llegar a Sudamérica, el primer caso confirmado en Lima-Perú se dio en marzo del 2020, las manifestaciones clínicas que presentaban los pacientes infectados por COVID-19 fueron: fiebre (88,7%), tos (57,6%), disnea o fatiga (45,6%), dolor muscular (mialgia) (44%), producción de esputo (28%), cefalalgia o dolor de cabeza (2.8%), hemoptisis (5%) y diarrea (3%); y las complicaciones neurológicas a nivel del sistema nervioso central (SNC) podemos mencionar al Accidente cerebrovascular (ACV) hemorrágico, ACV isquémico, encefalopatías, encefalitis, etc.; a nivel del sistema nervioso periférico (SNP) encontramos las alteraciones del olfato y gusto; la rabdomiolisis, el síndrome de guilliam barre (SGB). El objetivo de este estudio de investigación es si existe relación significativa entre las manifestaciones clínicas del COVID-19 con las complicaciones neurológicas en pacientes que hayan sido hospitalizados en el Hospital Regional de Ayacucho el 2021; el método fue de tipo no experimental, diseño descriptivo-correlacional-retrospectivo, realizando una recolección de datos por medio de ficha epidemiológica de covid-19
