Efficacy of treatment with silver sulfadiazine compared to other treatments in the prevention of infections in burn patients

Abstract

Objective: To systematize the evidence on the effectiveness of silver sulfadiazine treatment compared to other treatments in preventing infections in burn patients. Materials and Methods: A systematic review of international research studies was conducted, obtained through searches in the following databases: Epistemonikos, PubMed, Elsevier, Google Scholar, and Scielo. These studies were selected and analyzed using the GRADE system to determine the corresponding level of evidence. The search was performed using the DECS and MESH descriptors for Spanish and English searches, respectively. 20% (2/10) of the reviewed articles were from the United States and Iran, respectively, and 60% (6/10) were from the Philippines, the Netherlands, Brazil, India, the United Kingdom, and Thailand, respectively. Results: 30% (3/10) of the evidence indicates that the effectiveness of silver sulfadiazine is similar to other treatments in preventing infections in burn patients, while 70% (7/10) indicate that other treatments are more effective than silver sulfadiazine. Conclusions: 3 out of 10 pieces of evidence show that the effectiveness of silver sulfadiazine is similar to other treatments in preventing infections in burn patients, while 7 out of 10 pieces of evidence show that other treatments are more effective than silver sulfadiazine.

Objetivo: Sistematizar la evidencia sobre la eficacia del tratamiento con sulfadiazina de plata en comparación con otros tratamientos en la prevención de infecciones en pacientes con quemaduras. Materiales y Métodos: Se efectúa la revisión sistemática de investigaciones internacionales, obtenidas mediante base de datos: Epistemonikos, PubMed, Elsevier, y Scielo, las que analizaron mediante el sistema grade para ubicar el grado de evidencia respectiva. Se realizó la búsqueda utilizando descriptores DECS y MESH para la búsqueda en español e inglés respectivamente. El 20% (2/10) de los artículos revisados corresponden a EE. UU e Iran respectivamente, y el 60% (6/10) corresponden a Filipinas, Holanda, Brasil, india, Inglaterra y Tailandia respectivamente. Resultados: El 30% (03/10) de las evidencias indican que la eficacia es similar entre la sulfadiazina de plata comparado con otro tratamiento en la prevención de infecciones en pacientes con quemaduras, y el 70% (07/10) indican que es más eficaz otro tratamiento que la sulfadiazina de plata. Conclusiones: 3 de 10 evidencias demuestran que es similar la eficacia de la sulfadiazina de plata comparada con otros tratamientos en la prevención de infecciones en pacientes con quemaduras, y 7 de 10 evidencias demuestran que es más eficaz otro tratamiento que la sulfadiazina de plata.
