Effectiveness of the attitudes of emergency nursing staff in the care and stabilization of patients who self-injure

Abstract

The present work unfolds around the attitudes of emergency nursing staff towards patients who self-harm, a situation that has taken on global dimensions due to its high incidence and the impact it has on a personal, family, and social level. Even more so, considering that this type of act can lead to death. In this regard, attending to people who have caused themselves some form of self-harm is not only unavoidable but can become an important reference aimed at taking the necessary preventive measures to avoid the act of suicide, with some of the most prominent factors being the harmful use of alcohol, the stigmatization they receive for seeking help, childhood abuse, barriers to receiving timely attention, and the indiscriminate access to various means of self-harm. From this perspective, it is essential to consider that one of the main missions of nursing staff is the comprehensive care of the patient, especially in the emergency setting, where there is greater vulnerability and risk of serious sequelae or loss of life. Therefore, it is crucial that the care provided by nurses guarantees patient safety, avoiding stigmatizing attitudes that may make the patient feel more vulnerable. The design used for this work was a systematic review, based on the GRADE evaluation system, which allows for the evaluation of the quality of evidence from the selected articles from the following databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, EBSCO, and Epistemonikos. The reviewed articles showed the effectiveness of the attitudes of emergency nursing staff in the care and stabilization of self-harming patients.

El presente trabajo se despliega en torno a las actitudes del personal de enfermería de emergencia hacia pacientes que se autolesionan, situación que ha cobrado alcances globales, debido a su alta incidencia y al impacto que produce a nivel personal, familiar y social. Más aún, si se considera que este tipo de actos puede conducir a la muerte. En esta línea, atender a las personas que se han generado algún tipo de autolesión no solo es insoslayable, sino que se puede convertir en un importante referente orientado a tomar las medidas de prevención necesarias para evitar que llegue a concretarse el acto de suicidio, siendo algunos de sus factores más resaltantes, el uso nocivo de alcohol, la estigmatización que reciben por buscar ayuda, los abusos en la etapa de la niñez, los obstáculos para recibir atención oportuna y el acceso indiscriminado a diversos medios para autolesionarse.

Desde esta perspectiva, es menester tomar en cuenta que una de las principales misiones que tiene el personal de enfermería es el cuidado integral del paciente, más aún en el ámbito de emergencias, donde existe mayor vulnerabilidad y riesgo de secuelas graves o de pérdida de vidas. Por ello, es fundamental que en la atención que brindan las enfermeras se garantice la seguridad del paciente, evitando que sienta actitudes de estigmatización que lo hagan sentir más vulnerable.

El diseño utilizado para el desarrollo de este trabajo fue la revisión sistemática, que se basa en el sistema de evaluación GRADE, que permite evaluar la calidad de la evidencia de los artículos seleccionados de las siguientes bases de datos: PubMed, ScientDirect, EBSCO y Epistemonikos. Los artículos revisados evidenciaron que se encontró efectividad de las actitudes del personal de enfermería de emergencia en el cuidado y estabilización de pacientes que se autolesionan.
