Effectiveness of nasogastric tubes in patients with gastrointestinal bleeding

Abstract

Objective: Systematize the evidence on the effectiveness of the use of the nasogastric tube in patients with gastrointestinal bleeding. Material and Method: the design used was a systematic review. The population was made up of 20 articles from indexed journals, which, through inclusion and exclusion criteria, determined a sample of 10 scientific articles. The GRADE system was used to evaluate the quality and strength of recommendation of the evidence. Results: From the review carried out, 40% (4/10) come from the United States, 20% (2/10) come from France, 10% (1/10) from Turkey, 10% (1/10) Spain , 10% (1/10) Japan and 10% (1/10) Israel. According to the study design, 30% (3/10) were systematic reviews, 20% (2/10) randomized clinical trials, 40% (4/10) observational cohort and 10% (1/10) quasi-experimental. According to the quality of evidence, 50% (5/10) were high and the other 50% (5/10) were moderate. Conclusions: There is significant evidence of the effectiveness of the use of the nasogastric tube in patients with digestive bleeding.

Objetivo: Sistematizar las evidencias sobre a la efectividad del uso de la sonda nasogástrica en pacientes con hemorragia gastrointestinal. Material y Método: el diseño utilizado fue una revisión sistemática. La población estuvo conformada por 20 artículos de revistas indexadas, los cuales mediante criterios de inclusión y exclusión se determinó una muestra de 10 artículos científicos. Se utilizó el sistema GRADE para evaluar la calidad y fuerza de recomendación de la evidencia. Resultados: De la revisión realizada, el 40% (4/10) proceden de Estados Unidos, el 20% (2/10) proceden de Francia, 10% (1/10) de Turquía, 10% (1/10) España, 10% (1/10) Japón y 10% (1/10) de Israel. Según el diseño de estudio el 30% (3/10) fueron revisiones sistemáticas, 20% (2/10) ensayos clínicos aleatorizados, 40% (4/10) cohorte observacional y 10% (1/10) cuasiexperimental. Según calidad de evidencia, el 50% (5/10) fueron alta y el otro 50% (5/10) moderada. Conclusiones: Existe evidencia significativa de la efectividad del uso de la sonda nasogástrica en pacientes con hemorragia digestiva.
