Effectiveness of a manual therapy program on functional capacity and quality of life in post-mastectomized cancer patients with post-oncological treatment in a hospital in Lima, 2023

Abstract

Breast cancer is a global concern, being the second leading cause of death worldwide. In Peru, the incidence is significant, and treatment can cause adverse effects that impact the quality of life and functionality of patients. The main objective was to determine the effectiveness of a manual therapy program on functional capacity and quality of life in post-mastectomy oncological patients after oncological treatment. The study is applied, quantitative, and quasi-experimental with pre and post-test design. The Visual Analog Scale (VAS) will be used to determine pain levels, the DASH questionnaire to assess functional capacity in the upper limb, and the EORTC scale to identify quality of life levels. A survey will be used as an evaluation technique, and the instruments have been validated by expert judgment. The research will be carried out at the oncology rehabilitation unit in a hospital in Lima. The population will consist of 108 patients who will undergo the manual therapy program.

El cáncer de mama es una preocupación global, siendo la segunda causa de muerte en el mundo. En Perú, la incidencia es significativa, y el tratamiento puede causar efectos adversos que pueden afectar la calidad de vida y la funcionalidad de las pacientes. El objetivo principal fue determinar el nivel de efectividad de un programa de terapia manual en la capacidad funcional y calidad de vida en pacientes oncológicos post mastectomizadas con post tratamiento oncológico. El estudio es de tipo aplicado, de enfoque cuantitativo, diseño cuasi experimental con pre y post test. Se emplearán la escala análoga visual (EVA) para determinar el nivel del dolor, el cuestionario DASH para evaluar la capacidad funcional en el miembro superior, y la escala de EORTC para identificar el nivel de calidad de vida. Se aplicó como técnica de evaluación la encuesta y los instrumentos fueron validados por juicio de expertos. La investigación se llevará a cabo en la unidad de rehabilitación oncológica en un hospital de Lima. La población estará conformada por 108 pacientes que realizarán el programa de terapia manual.
