The present research paper, titled Relationship Between Mothers' Knowledge of Immunizations and the Compliance with the Vaccination Schedule for Children Under Five Years of Age at the Magdalena Health Center, November 2010, aims to determine the relationship between the level of knowledge about immunizations of mothers with children under five years old and the compliance with the vaccination schedule at the Magdalena Health Center. Material and Methods: This is a quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional, and correlational study design. A sample was selected using simple random probability sampling, resulting in a sample of 80 mothers who agreed to participate in the study after providing informed consent. Data collection was conducted using a questionnaire, with personalized interviews as the technique. Regarding the level of knowledge mothers of children under five years old who attend the Magdalena Health Center have about immunizations, 50% (40) possess an average level of knowledge; 33.75% (27) have a low level; and 16.25% (13) have a high level. This inclination and trend are consistent with the findings in the studied dimension “General Concepts about Immunizations and Vaccines,” where 52.5% (42) had an average knowledge level, and 61.25% (49) had a medium level in the dimension “Vaccination Schedule.” Additionally, 55% (44) of the participants interrupted the vaccination schedule. The most frequent reason was the child’s health issues (27.5%). Furthermore, when contrasting the study variables, it was concluded that a higher level of knowledge leads to better compliance with the vaccination schedule (p = 0.008 < 0.05). However, no significant association was found regarding knowledge based on occupation, origin, and mother’s educational level.
Resumen
El presente trabajo de investigación, titulado Relación entre el nivel de conocimiento de las madres sobre inmunizaciones y el cumplimiento del esquema de vacunación de niños menores de cinco años de edad en el centro de salud Magdalena, noviembre 2010, tiene como objetivo determinar la relación entre el nivel de conocimiento sobre inmunizaciones de las madres de los niños menores de cinco años y el cumplimiento del esquema de vacunación en el centro de salud Magdalena. Material y métodos: enfoque cuantitativo, de diseño no experimental, de corte transversal, correlacional. Se seleccionó la muestra mediante un muestreo probabilístico de selección aleatoria simple, obteniéndose una muestra constituida por 80 madres que decidieron participar al estudio, previo consentimiento informado. La recolección de los datos tuvo como instrumento el cuestionario, y la técnica fue la entrevista personalizada. En cuanto al nivel de conocimiento que tienen las madres de niños menores de cinco años que acuden al centro de salud Magdalena, respecto a inmunizaciones, el 50 % (40) poseen un nivel de conocimiento medio; el 33,75 %( 27), bajo; y el 16,25 % (13), alto. Esta inclinación y tendencia equivale a la encontrada en la dimensión estudiada “Conceptos generales sobre inmunizaciones y vacunas”, que encontró en la primera, medio, con 52,5 % (42), y en la segunda 61,25 % (49), y en la dimensión “Esquema de vacunación”, medio en 50 % (40). El 55 % (44) han interrumpido el esquema de vacunación. El motivo más frecuente es problemas de salud del niño (27,5 %). Además, al contrastar las variables de estudio, se concluyó que a mayor nivel de conocimiento, habrá cumplimiento del esquema de vacunación (p = 0,008 = < ,05). En cambio, no se pudo determinar asociación significativa respecto del conocimiento según ocupación, procedencia y grado de instrucción de la madre.
