Effectiveness of catheter clamping prior to removal in critically ill patients in the ICU

Objective: Systematize information on the effectiveness of Urinary Catheter Clamping before its removal, in critically ill patients in the intensive care unit. Material and Methods: Systematic quantitative retrospective observational review, the degree of evidence was identified using the Grade Evaluation System, found in the following databases: PubMed, Sciencedirect, Cochrane, Scielo, Wiley Online Library, Elsevier, Epistemonikos. Of the 10 articles systematically reviewed, 80% are RCTs, 10% are quasi-experimental; and 10% are systematic reviews. The results of the present study; 50% correspond to the country of China, 10% Turkey, 10% Taiwan, 10% Sweden, 10% South Korea, and 10% Greece. Results: 50% (n=5/10) of the articles show significant statistics in relation to the topic, because the volume of residual urine in 24 hours increases; better subjective perception during the first postoperative urination, causes a significant positive effect on storage symptoms. The other 50% (n=5/10) of the articles do not show any significant statistics. Conclusion: Half of the articles reviewed show that clamping the urinary catheter before its removal is effective, while the other half does not show any advantage in this regard.
Resumen
Objetivo: Sistematizar la información sobre efectividad del Pinzamiento del Catéter Urinario antes de su retirada, en pacientes críticos en la unidad de cuidados intensivos. Material y Métodos: Revisión sistemática observacional retrospectiva de tipo cuantitativa, el grado de evidencia se identificó mediante el Sistema de Evaluación Grade, encontrados en las siguientes bases de datos: PubMed, Sciencedirect, Cochrane, Scielo, Wiley Online Library, Elsevier, Epistemonikos. De los 10 artículos revisados sistemáticamente el 80% son ECA, el 10% son cuasi experimentales; y el 10% son revisiones sistemáticas. Los resultados del presente estudio; el 50% corresponden al país de China, 10% Turquía, 10% Taiwán, 10% Suecia, 10% Corea del Sur, y el 10% Grecia. Resultados: El 50% (n=5/10) de los artículos evidencian estadística significativa en relación al tema, porque aumenta el volumen de orina residual en 24 horas; mejor percepción subjetiva durante la primera micción posoperatoria, provoca un efecto positivo significativo sobre los síntomas de almacenamiento. El otro 50% (n=5/10) de los artículos no evidencian estadística significativa alguna. Conclusión: La mitad de los artículos revisados evidencian que el pinzamiento del catéter urinario antes de su retirada es efectivo, en tanto la otra mitad no evidencia ventaja alguna al respecto.
