Occupational stress and coping strategies of nurses in the medicine service (third floor) at Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen Hospital

The origin of this work is to understand the level of work-related stress in nurses in the Medicine service, a service in which they are constantly exposed to strong emotions, tensions, and risks due to the nature of the patients who come to this service. If we add inadequate working conditions to this, these factors collectively generate "work-related stress," which affects their productivity, leading to poor quality nursing care. The objective of the study is to determine the level of work-related stress and the coping strategies of nurses in the Medicine service (third floor) at the Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen National Hospital. The study is quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional, and non-experimental in design. The sample consists of 41 nurses from the Medicine service at the Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen Hospital. The instruments used were a Likert-type scale to measure stress and a coping strategies inventory developed by the author Nancy Rondoy, which were subjected to reliability testing. For the Likert-type scale, the Cronbach's Alpha coefficient was used, with a result of Alpha = 0.99, indicating reliability. For validity, Pearson’s correlation coefficient was applied, resulting in a correlation coefficient of R > 0.20, which indicates validity. Similarly, the Coping Strategies Inventory was validated through expert judgment (9 judges), which allowed adjustments to be made according to their suggestions, with a result of p < 0.05, indicating significance. The results were as follows: The majority of nurses (53.7%) presented a medium level of work-related stress. When analyzing the results by dimension, a medium level of work-related stress was also found in the physical, psychological, and social dimensions (61%, 61%, and 53.7%, respectively). 56% of the nurses in the Medicine service (third floor) at the Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen Hospital had a moderately adequate level of coping strategies. Of these, 56% of the nurses had a moderately adequate level of physiological coping strategies, 48% had an adequate level of cognitive coping strategies, and 43% had a moderately adequate level of behavioral coping strategies.
Resumen
El origen del presente trabajo es conocer el nivel de estrés laboral de la enfermera en el servicio de Medicina, servicio en el que constantemente está sometida a enfrentar emociones fuertes, tensiones y riesgos, por la naturaleza del paciente que acude a este servicio y si a este hecho añadimos condiciones de trabajo inadecuadas que en suma son generadores de “Estrés Laboral”, que repercute disminuyendo su capacidad productiva traduciéndose en una atención deEnfermería de baja calidad. El estudio tiene por objetivo determinar el nivel de estrés laboral y las estrategias de afrontamiento de las enfermeras(os) del servicio de Medicinadel (Tercer piso) del Hospital Nacional Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen. El estudio es de tipo cuantitativo, nivel descriptivo transversal, diseño no experimental, la muestra está conformada por 41 enfermeras(os) de servicio de Medicina del Hospital Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen. Los instrumentos que se utilizaron fueron una escala tipo Lickert para medir el Estrés y un Inventario de estrategias de afrontamiento elaborados por la Autora Nancy Rondoy, que fueron sometidas a pruebas de confiabilidad, Para la Escala tipo Lickert utilizo el coeficiente de Alfa de Crombach cuyo resultado fue Alfa= 0.99 siendo confiable y para la validez de conocimiento aplicó el coeficiente de correlación de Pearson, la cual arrojo un coeficiente de correlación R >0.20 siendo válido. Así mismovalido el Inventario de Estrategias de afrontamiento sometiéndolo a juicio de expertos (9 jueces) que permitió reajustar el mismo de acuerdo a las sugerencias planteadas, cuyo resultado fue p< 0.05 lo cual es significativo. Los resultados fueron;La mayoría de Enfermeras(os)(53.7%) presentan un nivel de Estrés laboral medio. Al analizar los resultados según dimensiones se encontró igualmente Estrés Laboral de nivel medio en las dimensiones físicas, psicológicas y social (61%, 61% y 53.7%) respectivamente. El 56% de las enfermeras (os) del servicio de Medicina (tercer piso) del hospital Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen, tienen un nivel de estrategias de afrontamiento medianamente adecuado.En donde el 56% de las enfermeras tienen un nivel de Estrategias fisiológicas de afrontamiento medianamente adecuado, el 48% de las enfermeras tienen un nivel de Estrategias cognitivas de afrontamiento adecuado y el 43% de las enfermeras tienen un nivel de Estrategias conductuales de afrontamiento medianamente adecuado.
