The objective of this research was to determine the relationship between the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of mothers regarding oral health and the oral hygiene status of children aged 3 to 5 years from the I.E.P. Juan Espinosa Medrano, Lima - 2016. The study was analytical, observational, cross-sectional, and prospective; the sample consisted of 51 children, selected through probabilistic sampling. Hypothesis testing was conducted using Kendall’s tau-b and Chi-square tests, with p ≤ 0.05 and 95% confidence. The oral hygiene status of the children in the study was found to be 72.5% (37) at a regular level. The level of knowledge of the sample was acceptable at 72.5% (37). The attitude was favorable at 84.3% (43), while the practices were poor at 60.8% (31). A relationship was found between the level of mothers’ oral health practices and the children’s oral hygiene status [Kendall’s tau-b = 0.347 and p = 0.020]. No relationship was found between the mothers’ level of knowledge [Kendall’s tau-b = 0.084 and p = 0.300] and attitudes [X2 = 3.590 and p = 0.166] regarding oral health and the children’s oral hygiene status, thus accepting the null hypothesis. The study concluded that there is a relationship between the mothers’ oral health practices and the children’s oral hygiene status, accepting the research hypothesis.

The objective of this research was to determine the effectiveness of music therapy in reducing dental anxiety in children aged 3 to 5 years attended at PRONOEI "Caritas Felices" Lima, 2018. Anxiety levels were measured using the Facial Image Scale (FIS) at three successive points (before the dental intervention, during the intervention without music therapy, and finally during the dental intervention with music therapy). Additionally, vital signs such as heart rate (HR) and respiratory rate (RR) were recorded. This study was analytical, with a quasi-experimental and self-controlled design. The most important findings showed that anxiety levels before the dental appointment ranged from moderate (20.0%) to severe (48.0%). During the dental appointment without music therapy, anxiety levels increased in 60% of the children, with only 40% showing normal anxiety levels. However, during the dental appointment with music therapy, anxiety levels decreased, as 86% of the children presented moderate anxiety levels, and the remaining 14% showed anxiety levels ranging from mild to moderate. Therefore, when the dental intervention was performed without music therapy, anxiety levels increased, although this increase was not statistically significant. In contrast, when music therapy was used, anxiety levels were reduced.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of two remineralizing toothpaste formulations compared to a fluoride toothpaste against the ATTCC 25175 strain of Streptococcus mutans through microbiological tests. An in vitro experimental design was used to observe the antimicrobial effect of three toothpaste formulations: Group 1 with a nanocomplex of Casein Phosphopeptide-Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (CPP-ACP), Group 2 with Hydroxyapatite, and Group 3 with Fluoride. The inhibition halos were measured using the disk diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer method) on agar plates previously inoculated with the bacterial strain at 24 and 48 hours. Twenty samples were analyzed per group, and the data were recorded in a previously validated data collection form. Results: The two remineralizing toothpaste formulations, Group 1 with CPP-ACP and Group 2 with Hydroxyapatite, showed antimicrobial effects against the ATTCC 25175 strain of Streptococcus mutans at 24 hours, with mean inhibition halos of 12.60 and 11.65, respectively. At 48 hours, antimicrobial effects were observed in all three groups, with mean inhibition halos of 12.80 for Group 1, 12.0 for Group 2, and 10.20 for Group 3. A significant difference was found between the two measurements for all groups (p=0.000, p<0.05). Conclusion: All three toothpaste formulations evaluated exhibited antimicrobial effects against the ATTCC 25175 strain of Streptococcus mutans at 48 hours, with the remineralizing pastes showing slightly superior effects.

(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2024-05-10) Rojas Foronda, María Rosario; Céspedes Porras, Jacqueline
The objective of this study was to compare the hardness of enamel with and without MI Varnish (Recaldent) before and after bracket bonding. An experimental, quantitative, and longitudinal study was conducted, comprising 40 teeth in artificial saliva divided into four groups of ten each. The first group did not receive MI Varnish, while the second group did. Both groups were subjected to 500 thermal cycling cycles. A third group was treated without MI Varnish, and a fourth group with MI Varnish, both subjected to 1000 thermal cycling cycles. The Student's t-test was used. The results showed that after 500 cycles, the initial average hardness of the group without MI Varnish was 326.42 +/- 39.62 HV (kg/mm²), with a final average hardness of 226.42 +/- 35.18 HV (kg/mm²), meaning the enamel hardness decreased. The group with MI Varnish showed an initial average hardness of 310.28 +/- 41.13 HV (kg/mm²) and a final average hardness of 293.51 +/- 41.37 HV (kg/mm²). After 1000 cycles, the initial average hardness of the teeth without MI Varnish reached 307.98 +/- 39.62 HV (kg/mm²), and the final hardness was 230.33 +/- 47.83 HV (kg/mm²). The enamel hardness decreased more than after 500 cycles. The initial average hardness of the teeth with MI Varnish was 311.83 +/- 24.02 HV (kg/mm²), and the final hardness was 263.61 +/- 32.29 HV (kg/mm²). We concluded that after 500 cycles, the enamel hardness was greater with MI Varnish.

(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2024-05-31) Casachagua Inga, Miguel Angel; Céspedes Porras, Jacqueline
Dental caries is a highly prevalent disease in the pediatric population, and several studies have found its association with nutritional status. The objective of this research was to determine whether there is a relationship between dental caries and body mass index (BMI) in schoolchildren at the Private Educational Institution Davis Moody, Huancayo 2022. To achieve this, an explanatory method with a quantitative approach and a non-experimental, descriptive design at a correlational level was used. The sample consisted of 145 schoolchildren selected through intentional non-probabilistic sampling. The presence of dental caries was measured using the CPOD and ceod indices, and the BMI was measured using height and weight data. Data was collected using a previously validated form. The results revealed a prevalence of caries in primary teeth of 77.24%, in permanent teeth of 80.68%, and in mixed dentition of 100%. The level of caries experience was very high in 45.5% and high in 25.5%, with a mean of 3.50±3.078 for the ceod index, 2.90±2.006 for the CPOD index, and 6.41±2.680 for the sum of the ceod+CPOD indices. The mean BMI for the studied schoolchildren was 18.24±3.48, with 66.2% having a normal weight, 17.2% overweight, and 14.5% obesity. A weak, negative, and significant association was found between BMI and the ceod indices (r=0.321, p=0.000) and ceod+CPOD indices (r=-0.221, p=0.007), while BMI and the CPOD index had a weak, positive, and significant correlation (r=0.177, p=0.00). It was concluded that there is a significant relationship between the presence of dental caries and BMI in the studied schoolchildren, observing that in primary and mixed dentition, as BMI increases, caries indices decrease, whereas in permanent dentition, as BMI increases, the caries index slightly increases.

Dislalia funcional y su relación con maloclusión dental en estudiantes de primaria de la I.E.P La semilla de Abraham Valdelomar, Lima – 2024
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2025-04-21) Olivera Carrera, Luz Marisela; Céspedes Porras, Jacqueline

The aim of this research was to determine the impact of malocclusions on self-esteem and the need for orthodontic treatment in adolescent patients attended at the ODAM dental clinic, Lima, 2021. A quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study design was used. The sample consisted of 93 patients aged 11 to 14 years, who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) was used to measure the severity of malocclusions and the clinical need for orthodontic treatment, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) was used to measure self-esteem, and the Aesthetic Component (AC) of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) was used to measure the need for orthodontic treatment according to the patient's perception. The results showed that most patients had some degree of malocclusion, with severe malocclusion being the most prevalent (67.7%). In terms of the distribution of malocclusion severity by age, very severe malocclusions were most commonly found at ages 13 and 14, and in terms of gender, malocclusions were more prevalent in females. Regarding self-esteem, two-thirds of the sample had high (46.2%) or medium (24.7%) self-esteem, while only 29.0% had low self-esteem. No statistically significant relationship was found between the severity of malocclusions and self-esteem level (p=0.809, p>0.05), nor between the severity of malocclusions and the need for orthodontic treatment as perceived by the adolescent patients (p=0.083, p>0.05).

Impact of self-esteem on the need for orthodontic treatment and quality of life related to oral health in children aged 11 to 14 years from the I.E. San Pedro Santísima Trinidad de Lurín, 2019
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2019-11-07) Silva Tumba, Jordan; Céspedes Porras, Jacqueline
Dental malocclusion is not a disease but a deviation from the aesthetic norm that requires orthodontic care, as it impacts physical, social, and psychological functioning, which are part of quality of life. It is understood that better aesthetics can lead to psychosocial improvement. Objective: To determine the association between the impact of self-esteem and the need for orthodontic treatment on oral health-related quality of life in children aged 11 to 14 at I.E. San Pedro Santísima Trinidad de Lurín, 2019. Methods: The sample consisted of 150 children, 49.3% male and 50.7% female, with an average age of 12.50 ± 1.08 years (minimum 11 years, maximum 14 years). Results: Self-esteem regarding the need for orthodontic treatment and quality of life, according to the Rosenberg index, demonstrated an association between the need for orthodontic treatment and self-esteem, but no association was found with quality of life or oral health. Additionally, oral health-related quality of life, assessed through the COHIP SF-19 index in relation to the need for orthodontic treatment, showed no statistically significant relationship between these variables. Conclusion: Further studies are proposed to assess the impact of self-esteem in relation to orthodontic treatments, including follow-up of patients after corrective treatments.
