Effective interventions for the prevention of surgical wound infection

Objective: To analyze the evidence on effective interventions for the prevention of surgical wound infection. Materials and methods: Observational and retrospective systematic review. The search was restricted to full-text articles and the selected articles were critically read using the Grade System evaluation to identify their level of evidence. In the final selection, 10 articles were selected, 50% (5/10) systematic reviews, 50% (5/10) cohort studies. 40% of the evidence found comes from Spain, 40% from Peru, 10% from the USA, and 10% from Cuba. Results: 50% of the studies (8, 11, 13, 15, 16) recommend antibiotic prophylaxis, 20% of the studies (7, 11) recommend wound cleaning, and 20% of the studies (10, 13) recommend not removing hair. 10% of the studies (12), report that there is no difference between covering or not the wounds, and report that contaminated and dirty wounds are more likely to generate infection at the surgical site. Conclusions: According to reviewed articles it was confirmed that antibiotic prophylaxis (5/10) articles, wound cleaning (2/10) articles, not removing hair (2/10) articles, there is no difference between covering or not the wounds decrease the risk of infection at the surgical site (1/10) articles, and that contaminated and dirty wounds are more likely to generate infection at the surgical site.
Resumen
Objetivo: Analizar las evidencias sobre las intervenciones efectivas para la prevención de la infección de heridas quirúrgico. Materiales y métodos: Revisión sistemática observacional y retrospectivo, la búsqueda se ha restringido a artículos con texto completo y los artículos seleccionados se sometieron a una lectura crítica, utilizando la evaluación de Sistema Grade para identificar su grado de evidencia. en la selección definitiva se eligieron 10 artículos, el 50% (5/10) revisión sistemática, el 50% (5/10) estudio cohorte. El 40 % de las evidencias encontradas proceden de España, el 40% de Perú, 10% EEUU, 10% Cuba. Resultados: El 50% de los estudios (8, 11, 13, 15, 16), se recomienda profilaxis antibiótica, así mismo, el 20% de los estudios (7, 11), recomienda la limpieza de las heridas, el 20% de los estudios (10, 13), se recomida la no eliminación de los vellos. El 10% de los estudios (12), refiere que no hay diferencia entre cubrir o no las heridas, y refiere que las heridas contaminadas y sucias tienen as probabilidades de generar infección en el sitio quirúrgico. Conclusiones: Según artículos revisados se corroboró que profilaxis antibiótica (5/10) artículos, la limpieza de las heridas (2/10) artículos, la no eliminación de los vellos (2/10) artículos, no hay diferencia entre cubrir o no las heridas disminuyen el riesgo de infección en el sitio quirúrgico (1/10) artículos, y que las heridas contaminadas y sucias tienen más probabilidades de generar infección en el sitio quirúrgico.
