The current study aims to determine the effectiveness of plaque control in individuals with orthodontic treatment attending the Orthodontics and Maxillofacial Orthopedics specialty at Norbert Wiener Private University, Lima, 2017. The instrument used was the Greene and Vermillion plaque index. The sample consisted of patients with fixed orthodontic appliances treated at the UPNW Orthodontics and Maxillofacial Orthopedics specialty between August and December 2017. A clinical examination was performed, along with an oral hygiene index using disclosing tablets to record plaque presence before and after a didactic workshop that included an oral hygiene technique. The data obtained were processed using the SPSS program, employing the Chi-square and Wilcoxon tests. The findings showed that before the workshop, 70.1% of the patients had a regular oral hygiene index (IHO) and 29.9% had a poor IHO. After the workshop, the IHO improved to 51.3% good, 46.7% regular, and 2% poor. Additionally, when evaluating the presence of plaque, it was found that before the workshop, the study population had a mean of 1.398 ± 0.403, which was reduced to 0.602 ± 0.412 after the workshop. The study concluded that the didactic workshop was effective in reducing plaque presence in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment at the Orthodontics and Maxillofacial Orthopedics specialty at UPNW, 2017.

The teaching of mechanical plaque control is of utmost importance, as its goal is to prevent periodontal diseases and create a positive attitude in the patient, inform, and motivate them. The objective of this observational, descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional, and relational-level research was to assess the effectiveness of the modified Bass and modified Stillman brushing techniques for bacterial plaque control in secondary school students. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 97 children aged 10 to 15 years. A plaque disclosure substance was used, and oral hygiene was evaluated using the O'Leary Index before and after the educational talks. The dental surfaces were then assessed, considering two groups: one for instruction in the modified Stillman brushing technique. It was concluded that before brushing, the group using the modified Bass technique had an average of 67.8%, while the Stillman group had 86.0%. After brushing, both techniques proved effective, with the modified Bass technique showing 22.8% improvement and the Stillman technique showing 24.6%.

Beliefs in oral health and oral hygiene practices of caregivers of older adults in nursing homes, Chaclacayo, 2021.
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-05-17) Santos Landeo, Magdalena; Vilchez Bellido, Dina
Older adults experience functional deterioration and a high prevalence of chronic diseases, increasing their need for care and elevating their level of dependence, requiring others to perform their daily basic activities, including taking care of their oral health. This responsibility is carried out in nursing homes by staff referred to as caregivers. If oral health care is not a priority for caregivers, it may influence poor oral care practices for the elderly under their care. The aim of this research was to relate oral health beliefs and oral hygiene practices among caregivers of older adults in nursing homes in Chaclacayo, 2021. An observational and relational study was conducted using a questionnaire that includes caregiver characteristics, oral hygiene practices with the elderly, and the Nursing Dental Coping Belief Scale (nDCBS), a Likert-type questionnaire to measure caregivers' oral health beliefs, in a sample of 47 caregivers from nursing homes. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed using Chi-square, Student's t-test, and the Wilcoxon test (p ≤ 0.05 as significant). The results indicate that there is no relationship between oral health beliefs and oral hygiene practices of caregivers of older adults (p=0.119); incorrect beliefs were evident among caregivers, however, oral hygiene practices were correct. It is concluded that there is no relationship between oral health beliefs and oral hygiene practices of caregivers of older adults in nursing homes in Chaclacayo.

(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2021-12-09) Albino Díaz, Ruth Nancy; Aguirre Morales, Anita Kori
Gingival health is crucial for the initiation of the alternatives offered by the specialty of dentistry, which is responsible for maintaining the integrity and completeness of the dental organs, with the main function being the union of the tooth to the bone. Fixed orthodontics is one of the alternatives aimed at providing an aesthetically pleasing smile in harmony with the maxillary structures and the teeth, often presenting periodontal pathologies due to the accumulation of dental biofilm around orthodontic appliances and poor oral hygiene. This study aimed to determine the gingival health of patients with fixed appliances in three dental centers in Lima in 2021. A descriptive, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach was conducted. The sample consisted of 100 patients (57 females, 43 males), whose gingival health was evaluated using the Loe and Silness index, and their oral hygiene habits were assessed through a hygiene questionnaire consisting of 9 questions. The results showed that 31% of the patients had mild gingival conditions, 66% had moderate gingival conditions, and 3% had severe gingival inflammation. According to the hygiene questionnaire, 94% had regular hygiene habits and 6% had poor hygiene habits. Conclusion: Gingival issues are associated with poor oral hygiene habits, caused by the accumulation of dental biofilm and inadequate oral hygiene products, leading to bleeding and other issues that affect oral health.

Relationship between quality of life in oral health and Type II Diabetes Mellitus in patients attending the Life`s Good Polyclinic San Juan de Miraflores district 2021.
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-05-05) Giraldo Milla, Celso William; Girano Castaños, Jorge Alberto
One of the chronic and systemic diseases is diabetes mellitus, which affects oral health. The severity of its manifestations depends on the stage of the disease, influencing the individual's quality of life. Given this, the objective of this research was: "To establish the relationship between oral health-related quality of life and type II diabetes mellitus in patients attending the Life’s Good Polyclinic in the San Juan de Miraflores district, 2021." An observational, analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted. The population consisted of 162 people with diabetes mellitus and 162 without diabetes, all over 40 years of age, selected through non-probabilistic convenience sampling. The variables considered were sex, age, and oral hygiene. Data was collected using the Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified (IHO-S) and the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14). Our results showed that 148 (91.40%) diabetic participants exhibited a regular quality of life, of whom 77 had regular oral hygiene, 68 had poor oral hygiene, and 3 had good oral hygiene. 8 (4.90%) participants with poor quality of life showed poor oral hygiene, and 6 (3.70%) with good quality of life had regular or good oral hygiene. The non-diabetic participants (162, 100%) revealed having good quality of life and consequently, good and regular oral hygiene. It is concluded that oral health-related quality of life is related to the presence of diabetes mellitus, and is also influenced by oral hygiene; however, it is not related to age and sex.
