Effectiveness of preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis in abdominal surgery to prevent postoperative infections

Materials and methods: This is a systematic review, observational and retrospective in nature. The 8 scientific articles on the effectiveness of preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis in abdominal surgery to prevent postoperative infections were found in the following databases: Medline, PubMed, and Cochrane Plus. All articles correspond to systematic reviews and meta-analyses, with 2 systematic reviews, 1 meta-analysis, 1 prospective observational study, and 1 retrospective observational study. Results: Among the 8 reviewed articles, 87.5% (n=7/8) clearly demonstrate that preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis in abdominal surgery is effective in preventing postoperative infections, using the following antibiotics: Cefazolin and Ceftriaxone. Conclusions: The reviewed studies provide evidence that preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis in abdominal surgery to prevent postoperative infections is effective, and its inclusion in clinical guidelines is recommended.
Resumen
Materiales y métodos: Revisión Sistemática observacional y retrospectivo. Los 08 artículos científicos sobre Eficacia de la profilaxis antibiótico preoperatorio en cirugía abdominal para prevenir las infecciones postoperatorias, fueron hallados en las siguientes bases de datos Medline, Pub Med y Cochrane Plus, todos ellos corresponden al tipo y diseño de estudios Revisiones Sistemáticas y Meta análisis 02 y Revisiones Sistemáticas 03, Meta análisis 01, Prospectivo observacional 01, Retrospectivo observacional 01. Resultados: Los 08 artículos revisados, el 87.5% (n=07/08) evidencian fehacientemente que la profilaxis antibiótico preoperatorio en cirugía abdominal es eficaz para prevenir las infecciones postoperatorias utilizando los siguientes antibióticos Cefazolina y Ceftriaxona. Conclusiones: Se evidenció en las investigaciones revisadas que la profilaxis antibiótico preoperatorio en cirugía abdominal para prevenir las infecciones postoperatorias es eficaz, y se recomienda su inclusión en las guías clínicas.
